Yilang “Doublelift” Peng (28) is a legendary player in League of Legends and now a Twitch streamer. His career was closely associated with Team SoloMid, the most valuable and biggest LoL team in the world. Now he says: the team is hurting its brand value with the current squad for 2022. Because TSM is going “full China,” that makes it hard for fans to stay a fan.
Who is Doubelift?
The most powerful man in US LoL is said to be quite a scumbag who finishes off players
TSM picks up 2 young Chinese – Now has 4 Asians in the squad in 2022.
This is TSM’s current squad for 2022: Besides Jungler Spica (China) and Top-Laner Huni (South Korea), who are left from 2021, they got 3 new players:
- From Team Liquid TSM signed ADC “Tactical” who once replaced Doublelift, but couldn’t really establish himself as an equal successor
- TSM also signed 2 talents from China who played there in the 2nd league, the “Academy-League”: Support Shenyi and Midlaner Keiadu.
- As a new head coach comes 30-year-old Chawy, who was born in Singapore.
With this TSM now has 3 Chinese, a South Korean and a US-American under contract for 2022.
TSM actually wanted to sign its star player Bjergsen for 2022, but he decided to move to Team Liquid despite a great offer. TSM then announced that it would focus on young talent, but promised to remain competitive.
Quite a bitter loss for TSM: Bjergsen leaves.
Doublelift thinks it will be hard to be a TSM fan in 2022
This is what Doublelift criticizes: The streamer says:
“In terms of brand value, I don’t think it’s fun to be a fan of a squad that speaks mostly Chinese. That’s just the way it is. We’re in the West, we’re in America, in NA, and supposedly have an American team. We want them to represent our culture. It’s going to be really hard to be a fan, I guess.”
He says TSM has gone “full China.” Besides Team Liquid, who are actually a pure EU team, and Team Korea (Cloud 9), there is now a China team in the US league LCS with TSM.
Doublelift concedes, however: The two Chinese additions are probably better than just taking two NA players and totally stinking.
The other option for TSM would have been to buy expensive, established stars from Europe and the US like Jensen or Mikyx. But the two Chinese talents would certainly be much cheaper.
Investing in players from North America is not considered a good option by Doublelift, they are just terrible.
TSM loses streamer with one of the biggest twich channels in the world
This is the next blow for TSM: In addition to the criticism from Doublelift, TSM has now lost its star streamer Myth. He says he doesn’t feel as comfortable at TSM after key people left for him, such as LoL player Bjergen and Leena Xu. He also feels he doesn’t play a big role in TSM’s content strategy.
Therefore, Myth will not renew his contract at TSM and will leave the organization.
Myth has one of the 10 largest Twitch channels in the world with 7.4 million followers.
Apparently there is a big upheaval at TSM. One has now lost almost all the “big names” in a few months: Besides Doublelift, Bjergsen and Myth, the strong, German midlaner PowerOfEvil, the sinfully expensive supporter SwordArt and, with Leena Xu, an important identification figure in the organsation went.
Here’s what’s behind it: The US LCS league has huge problems building up players from its own region. In recent years, more and more Europeans and Asians are coming into the league. It’s not like there were many US Americans playing or coaching for TSM in 2021.
TSM is replacing a German, a Dane, an Australian, and a South Korean with 2 Chinese, a US American, and someone from Singapore in 2022.
But the strong focus on people who speak Chinese is already noticeable and apparently also concerns Doublelift.
In the past, U.S. teams often brought in players from Asia who had already reached their zenith there and gold-plated a year or two with a top team by continuing their careers in the U.S., where there is much less pressure than in the top two leagues, LCK and LPL.
Top Laner Huni is about such an example. The now 24-year-old played one year for SKT1 in 2017 and has been touring the West ever since without really being successful.
TSM, however, is not bringing in veterans for 2022, but up-and-coming players from Asia. Whereas in recent years they have relied on Western talent and fielded two legendary US players in Bjergsen and Doublelift in 2020, they are now going in a completely different direction.
That’s a bit puzzling that TSM is going for a “cheap solution” when so much money is coming in through huge deals. We’ll see if the young players from China can excite the fans in 2022.
Overall, TSM is in upheaval right now, probably because many have a problem with the demeanor of team president Reginald:
