Team Information:
For Dota 2 fans Natus Vincere day has already become legendary. Not a single team from the CIS region has been able to repeat the success of NaVi rosters – a three-time passage to the main stage of The International. Therefore, despite unsuccessful – Season s and endless squad changes, Esport fans still love this team, support it even when it fails and, of course, after spectacular victories.
Many look for the veterans of previous squads: Dendy, XBOCT, Puppey, KuroKy, Artstyle and others, even though many of them no longer perform and do something else – they coach, commentate and so on. NaVi’s history in Dota 2 is filled with different sides: The team had ups and downs, but one thing is for sure – it’s very interesting.
Legends
NaVi organization appeared on December 17, 2009 – at that time there was only one Counter-Strike roster. Interestingly, the name NaVi was originally taken from the movie “Avatar”, and the “decryption” of Natus Vincere appeared later, but it was a perfect match – now you can not imagine another.
Dota cast (still the first) appeared in October 2010, and after several changes looked like this: Artstyle in the carry position (those who have seen Dota recently were probably surprised!), Dendi – of course on the beloved middle track, XBOST, Puppey and LighTofHeaveN aka Lost. It is these five who will turn to gold. Each of his players will glorify his name and organization by winning the first The International.
TI1 was the first major Dota 2 tournament. The teams did not differ in chemistry and had virtually no experience in the discipline: they all played the first Dota. Even NaVi himself was joined by two players (Puppey and Lost) two months before the tournament started. However, this does not affect the achievement of the “Golden Five” – all of them were equal and were able to achieve a historic victory.
The 2011 International
Natus Vincere had no problems in the group and defeated all rivals. Then the rinks went through the rivals in the playoffs and lost only one card – in the final. In the final with a score of 3: 1 was defeated Chinese team EHOME with players like QQQ and LanM in the squad. This alone proves that the talk about a small number of rivals is unfounded. Other teams included future DOTA 2 stars like xiao8, Hao, KuroKy, Fear and Universe.
It was not possible to keep the winning list for the next – Season : Artstyle left the team in October and with a scandal: the organization even announced a boycott to him because he refused to give NaVI the percentage of prize money from TI. Instead, a smile came and Puppey became the team captain – he was the one who predetermined their game for the next few years. Many fans still believe he should have stayed in the lineup at all costs.
But that was still a long way: we managed to start this – Season with a victory in a major tournament ESWC 2011. Then the first The Defense, two Starseries and several lesser tournaments were won. Although NaVi was the leading team in the CIS and Europe, they were not favorites before TI2. It was in this status that Chinese teams went to Seattle – it was assumed that they would not give a chance to representatives of other regions.
At that point, NaVi’s game was not perfect: less than a month before the launch of TI2, the team stumbled over the second – Season of The Defense, finishing only 7th-8th. At TI itself, it had serious problems in the group and did not reach the upper bracket of the playoffs without difficulty – under its own steam, after rallying at the last moment, it turned 2-6 on cards into 8-6.
The road to the playoffs was also very difficult: on the way to the finals NaVi was defeated by three Chinese teams with a score of 2: 1. These were DK, Invictus Gaming and LGD – all of whom were very formidable opponents and were considered favorites. The latter even approached the match with a score of 18: 0. In the grand final, the Ukrainian team had to face Invictus Gaming again – unfortunately, this time the result was different.
Of course, the defeat in the final is always disappointing, let alone the second place in TI after winning the previous draw. But considering that before the tournament few people thought NaVI would even reach one of the top lines, this result is really impressive. They managed to fight on equal terms against the then reigning Chinese teams – why they won them all, but had to beat them twice to take the IG championship title.
The lineup for the new – Season remains the same. The team immediately won tournaments and collected an armful of trophies by mid-spring. Then the results deteriorated, but that didn’t bother anyone: It was assumed that the team was already thinking about and preparing for TI4. For such a titled squad, other tournaments have already become not very interesting.
The fans were expecting the highest successes of the team: After two second places in a row, it was time to return the championship title. But the game didn’t go well: the group stage (and there was only one group in this tournament, so all 16 teams played each other once) NaVi ended with a map difference of 8-7. They ended up in the lower bracket of the playoffs and immediately lost to Cloud9. They were then eliminated from the tournament, finishing 7th-8th.
It became a cold shower for both the organization and the fans. After three years in the finals, such an early departure seemed unimaginable. It turned out that there were internal contradictions in the team even before the tournament. As a result, Puppey and KuroKy left the team and formed Team Secret. Then the majority of fans agreed on the choice of leadership: if there was no way to reconcile the five, it was necessary to keep at least the main assets of the team – Dendy and XBOCT.
At the time, few people thought this reshuffle was the end of NaVi’s golden era. Changes were ripe, a weak result at TI4 confirmed their necessity, but it seemed that the team would soon return to the elite. The new players were initially Vanskor and Fng – he took the place of the captain. Both of them were able to show themselves well in other compositions from the CIS and were considered rising stars.
But a period of turmoil began in the team: there were no results, so the exchange of players was carried out constantly. Fng was the first to leave – the “veterans” did not accept him, so he spent a little more than two months with the squad. Then Goblak and DK Phobos visited NaVi and also left quickly, but there were still no results. It wasn’t until April that the roster was formed: Dendy and XBOCT remained unchanged, Funnik was also present, and during this chaotic – Season he managed to become active and return. Another place was occupied by the young player Sonneiko, who showed well in the Power Rangers, and the club legend Artstyle became captain. The scandalous departure was forgotten.
Since the – Season was not successful for NaVi, the team did not receive an invitation to TI, and in the state in which it was before, it was difficult to expect qualification. But under the leadership of Artstyle, changes for the better were outlined and the qualification was still won. There was moderate optimism among fans: at the DreamLeague – Season 3 tournament in June, the team reached the finals, even though it lost to Virtus Pro.
This time NaVi was certainly not considered among the title candidates, and yet there was hope for a miracle: after all, three legendary players, the winners of the first TI, were still in the squad. Unfortunately, the tournament shattered all illusions: previously considered a failure at TI4 compared to what the team showed at TI5 was almost a dream. Born to Win remained in the last place in the group with a card difference of 3: 11 and lost the first match in the playoffs. The last place – so the end was set in the history of this composition.
Artstyle was sent to the reserves immediately after the tournament, PSM became the captain, but did not last long. The results were frightening, so in October it was announced that a “new era” was coming and this lineup was completely disbanded. As a result, the “New Era” became an object for jokes that has not been forgotten until now: The old players – Dendi and Sonneiko – appeared in a completely new lineup, Funnik was also there, but only temporarily base. Then Artstyle rejoined NaVi, the last two places were occupied by Ditya Ra and Ax.Mo.
The situation became ridiculous due to bad marketing, but there were also more serious problems. The invited players clearly did not reach the best in the CIS, let alone the world stage. NaVi gradually faded into the background. The results were consistent and the reshuffle continued with General. The team played better with him: they managed to perform successfully in several major tournaments. Of course, the successes were not the same as before, but compared to the dismal nightmare of fall 2015 and early 2016, the game has gotten much better.
Dota 2
Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena title from Valve. The successor to the extremely popular Warcraft 3 modification DotA (Defense of the Ancients), Dota 2 was the company’s first strategy game and was released on the download platform Steam on July 9, 2013. The game is a free-to-play title that can be played completely free of charge and is financed through in-game microtransactions, similar to Team Fortress 2.
Dota 2 is – unlike other big MOBA titles like League of Legends – free to play with all heroes. However, game items can be purchased in the Dota 2 store, but all of them have no effect on the gameplay. Only cosmetic items like different skins for the heroes can be purchased. Just like in Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Portal 2, it is possible to create your own content via the Steam Workshop.
