Call of Duty: Warzone can confidently be called a great success. Originally conceived as a free-to-play spin-off for the 2019 release of CoD: Modern Warfare, the battle royale still boasts hundreds of thousands of daily players, and a successor has already been confirmed.
But it’s not all sunshine: fans have long wanted more locations that vary as part of a map rotation and thus provide more variety. Now, however, an important reason has been given as to why you should not hope for new maps should.
The size of Warzone be crazy
With Verdansk and Caldera, Warzone – apart from the smaller map Rebirth Island – only has two large maps, between which, as is well known, you can’t simply switch back and forth. Since December 2021, the action has only taken place in the Pacific realms of Caldera, while Verdansk has been deactivated.
Comparing Warzone’s display to its genre rivals, it’s easy to understand the many requests for more variety. In Apex Legends, three of the four maps alternate in an hourly rhythm. In PUBG, there is at least one of five locations with every – Season , and Fortnite only has one map, but it is known that it is revised very often.
CoD Warzone’s Live Operations Lead, Josh Bridge, recently answered questions in an interview with streamer TeePee. Among other things, he was of course also asked about new maps and his answer was surprisingly direct:
The team would very much
offer new locations, but a technical problem prevents this: The installation and reinstallation size of Warzone are already absolutely crazy
. Josh Bridge points to the old console generation Xbox One / PlayStation 4, which would still be used by a large part of the gaming community.
Every update costs players: As we know, these devices are often only equipped with 500 GB of storage space. According to Bridge, this technical hurdle even has a direct impact on Warzone’s player numbers: With every major update that requires a correspondingly large download, players would be lost.
Warzone not designed for longevity
Josh Bridge also candidly explains why Warzone is in constant danger of bursting at the seams. It’s simply due to the game’s technical design, he says. Publisher Activision didn’t expect Warzone to turn out to be such a success, which is why they had to work with a less than optimal development pipeline.
Verdanks, for example, was never designed with the idea that more than 180 weapons would be added after the fact. In the end, the development team seems to have to live with technical limitations that can’t be easily removed afterwards. Nevertheless, a map rotation is still on the cards.
And what about Warzone 2? After all, the successor is likely to be planned differently from the start. Whether that will allow for more maps remains to be seen. Josh Bridge hints that he likes the idea of finding out what else can be done with a large map and many players apart from classic Battle Royale.
