Destiny 2 revamps PvP in Season 18 – CoD

Destiny 2’s Iron Banner event was supposed to excite the guardians with “Rift”. The mode could not really score in the end. That’s why Bungie is once again looking for the unique “BOOMSHAKALAKA!” twist for PvP. It should now succeed with the new mode “Eruption”, which is reminiscent of “Call of Duty” killstreaks, only with many more space abilities.

This PvP mode has been announced by Bungie: For starters, Guardians will no longer be able to duel in Rift mode during the Iron Banner event in – Season 18. Instead, they can expect a “Call of Duty” interpretation of Killstreaks for Destiny 2.

Just like in Killstreaks, players who can collect many kills in a row without dying will be rewarded. However, not with little helpers, as in CoD, but with a decent boost to their space skills. Each kill also makes you shine brighter and can also push your team.

Experienced players might already be familiar with this gameplay, however, as Breakout is basically the familiar Conflict PvP mode. But as the mode currently stands, it was too unspectacular for Bungie for an Iron Banner event. So it was modified.

Alan Blaine, Bungie’s Principal Technical Designer, explained exactly how this mode will work and where you can play it soon.

You shine so bright you can’t be missed. Only skilled guardians can survive now.

What is outbreak and how does the mode work? It is a modified version of the former team deathmatch mode “Conflict”, but Bungie has added a new “BOOMSHAKALAKA!” to it. Just like in “Conflict”, you also get points for your kills in “Breakout”.

In Destiny 2, however, this new mechanic also neatly pushes your Space abilities. Kills give you and your team ability energy. This increases if you manage to take out a number of enemies without dying. Assists will also count towards this.

  • The first kill grants you only a small amount of ability energy.
  • Your second kill, without dying, grants you the buff “Recharge”. You start to glow. From now on, each kill is worth 3 points, and you also get +10% super energy and +20% grenade, melee, and class ability energy.
  • If you make your fifth kill without dying, you buff yourself as “Ready”. Now your guardian shines as bright as day, your position is marked for your team, and the hunt is on.
  • “Ready” kills now grant you +12% Super and +5% grenade, melee, and class energy. Additionally, the team benefits as they gain +5% super and +10% grenade, melee, and class energy.

That’s why you shouldn’t rejoice too soon: The best guardians who reach “Primed” do not only enjoy advantages. You shine so brightly that the opposing team not only sees you for miles. You are also worth 3 points to them, which makes you a preferred target. Only skilled guardians can survive then.

And those who shine so brightly are also always on the verge of breaking out, so to speak. Therefore, as an additional challenge, you get a tight 15-second timer, which you can only reset to 15 seconds by further kills. If you don’t succeed until the timer reaches 0, it will burst out of you and your guardian will “burst”. This ends your killstreak and also the hunt.

What else can you expect for PvP in – Season 18? In – Season 18, another returning map from Destiny 1 is coming to the Crucible alongside “Outbreak”. However, there are no hints or clues as to which map it could be. Bungie doesn’t want to spoil anything here yet.

“Eruption” sounds exciting, but probably brings even more skill kills to PvP.

Bungie does not want to repeat the “Rift debacle

That’s why “Outbreak” is launching as a test first: Since “Outbreak” is basically a new mode for players, some real testing in live play is a perfectly good idea. As Alan Blaine points out, they learned from the bad experience with “Rift” in – Season 17.

Destiny 2 players hate a PvP mode in the Iron Banner – Threatening even the staff.

From there, Bungie will first make “Outbreak” available to you in the non-critical environment of Crucible Labs during – Season 18 and gather feedback on it. Only when everything fits there and maybe a few fixes have been made, the mode will officially come to the Iron Banner. This could probably be in – Season 19.

And what happens with the Rift mode?

After the start of “Rift” was known to be quite bumpy, with its bugs and some “teething problems”, however, after the first fixes, the player numbers also improved. It seems that there is still potential for the mode and that it will not be abandoned.

  • At least 1.5 million guardians have played at least one Rift match.
  • 300,000 of you have managed to reset your Iron Banner rank with Rift. 150,000 guardians even twice.
  • Two players must have had so much fun with “Rift” that they caused noticeable-crazy swings in Bungie’s stats.
    • One Keeper reset his rank 17 times in just 55 hours of play.
    • Another played Rift for over 133 hours in – Season 17 alone.
  • And our Destiny writer Christos Tsogos also loves Rift mode.

“Rift” has potential and may stay in the game for now.

“Rift” won’t be mothballed in the Destiny content vault for now, then. Bungie will instead bring the mode to the Crucible with a weekly rotation. Already in the first week of – Season 18 they start with it and will then bring it back again in week 8 as well as week 14. Including the option for private matches on any map.

More Rift updates and changes are planned: With player feedback, the Rift mode has also been optimized and adjusted once again. It is planned that it will also receive further changes in the future.

  • Rift will get more standard rules for match extensions. This should give the teams the chance to break a possibly existing tie after all.
  • AFK protection has been updated to take advantage of Rift-specific events.
  • There are also plans for Rift mode in the coming – Season .
    • Instead of only 6vs6 also 3vs3 matches.
    • Using smaller maps for Rift, like Wurmhafen or asymmetric maps, like Burnout.
    • A reduction in blackscreen time after a successful dunk.
    • As well as other measures to deter kill farming and the return of Multispark.

Rift, just like Control, is expected to return to the Iron Banner event at some point. But until that happens, Guardians will first prove their skills in Breakout and boost their abilities in it.

What do you think about the return of Team Deathmatch mode? Does it sound exciting with potential to you, so you’ll definitely give it a try in – Season 18? Or does this heated gameplay mechanic have zero appeal to you, as it once again only adds more abilities as well as a heavy shower of grenades to PvP? Let us know what you think in the comments.
