Crocodile’s Tough Day: A Lesson in Drafting

Over the weekend, the best pros in played each other: it’s getting close to the end of the – Season , and all regions have important playoff games. At the beginning of 2022, the crocodile behemoth was still a strong choice in the top lane. But on August 20, the crocodile had a really bad day. That could cost him his job in the coming weeks.

What was that thing with Renekton before?

  • At the beginning of 2022, Renekton was a star in LoL. We were still writing in January 2022 that Renekton was so strong that he was banned in every single match in South Korea.
  • Because the champ can do everything: he could stun, gank, tank, and tower dive.
  • He was considered a really good “blind pick” at the beginning of 2022, who could be chosen first and teams could be built around him.

Balance update goes heavy on tanks that do a lot of damage

What has changed? In League of Legends, nothing stays the same for long. Since January, major patches have been made, again and again Riot turned the balance of the MOBA.

Because especially “tanks that can deal out a lot of damage”, so-called “bruisers”, were a declared thorn in Riot’s side: they didn’t want that anymore:

  • Champions should either do a lot of damage like Assassin (Akali, Shaco, Kassadin)
  • or can withstand a lot, like Tanks (Dr. Mundo, Trundle, Aatrox)
  • not both, like Bruiser (Renekton, Olaf, Wukong)

Thus, Renekton was among the losers of the major balance update 12.10. The strong crocodile of yore has now temporarily become a “problem croc”.

On August 20, Renekton single-handedly loses some important games

This is the problem with Renekton now: The problem with Renekton now some professionals had to learn bitterly on August 20. Because once the crocodile has fallen behind the opponent in the top lane, the games can really go against him.

The site Dexerto lists 3 examples at once of how badly Renekton was beaten up in his top lane on August 20:

  • In Brazil, Parang lost his lane 0-14 with Renekton, the 26-year-old South Korean refusing to align the hero defensively even when everything was going against him.
  • In the U.S., Flyquest played Champ Renekton after Toplaner Philip gained confidence in Match 1. But he then went 0-7-0 with Renekton and Team Liquid rolled over FlyQuest in the next 3 matches.
  • In Korea, Sandbox faced Gen G with Renekton and even prioritized the crocodile. In 3 games, Dove picked the champion. Games 2 and 4 became his personal Waterloo. He went down with the crocodile: 0-9-0 in game 2, 0-4-1 in game 4.

Draft expert goes completely wild at Renekton

Who’s getting particularly excited? Former coach and analyst, Nick “LS” de De Cesare, is considered a thought leader and mastermind in LoL. His big thing, as a former card game strategist, is the draft: he believes neither coaches nor players have a clue about the draft in LoL. That’s why experts like him are needed.

At the moment LS is streaming again, after a short but super-exciting appearance as Cloud9’s coach: LS has a problem with Renekton, because he sees the champ as a “comfort pick” that is not questioned at all.

That’s exactly the kind of thing LS has experience with, because for years he railed against a default item in LoL that everyone also saw as “no alternative” – except him. Just like Lee Sin has been delivering lousy results as a jungler for a while now but still getting picked, LS is also looking at Champ Renekton. So on Saturday LS was completely stunned that the pro kept playing Renekton even though the crocodile looked so toothless. LS watched in disbelief as Korean Dove chose Renekton for the 3rd time – sealing his doom.

When things go badly with Renekton, they go really badly.

What is the reason for this with Renekton? Renekton is the case of a champion who looks fantastically strong when everything goes according to plan and he can pull off his game.

But when Renekton falls behind, that’s when matches really go wrong. He’s probably a “lose more” champ, so once he’s on the losing end, he goes full throttle and races to the finish.

It also just seems to be a pick that a lot of toplaners feel comfortable with, even if they should feel great discomfort.
