Column: “It’s nice here!” – which city in an MMO did you like the most?

What would an RPG be – apart from the great landscapes, all the monsters and NPCs – without really great cities? Especially in MMOs, such places are immensely important, because that’s where life happens, where players meet and communicate or trade their goods with each other. Not to mention, such cities are often simply beautiful. But which city did you like best?

Role-playing games and MMOs mean freedom, exploration, quests, quests and more quests. You travel as a hero from A to B, defeat countless monsters, save the world what feels like ten times over, and fill your pockets with exciting treasures (and often trash). At the end of such a journey, however, you just want to stop at an inn, put your heroic feet up, drink warm mead and enjoy the adventures you’ve experienced. But where is the best place for that? After all, in any role-playing game there are countless towns and cities, all of which have their advantages somehow. So where should you go to rest?

Column: World of Warcraft – the big choice
The best example is probably the almost infinitely large World of Warcraft with all its locations, most of which are even connected via chat. As a player, you have a free choice. Whether Horde or Alliance, there are even several capitals of your own faction available. If you prefer to cuddle with the enemy, you can also visit the neutral cities Shattrath or Dalaran.

So the choice is limitless. Nature lovers of the Horde, for example, travel to Thunder Bluff and enjoy the view while relaxing and petting a cow. Those who like it more Gothic prefer to visit the Undercity or – from the Alliance side – the Iron Forge. Players who don’t like other players will visit the Draenei in their pink fortress Exodar. And if that’s not enough for you, you can simply go to one of the smaller towns outside the metropolises, which often simply impress with their great atmosphere. Who hasn’t spent a few minutes standing around in Loot Bay, enjoying the view and raising a glass with the pirates?

Column: Guild Wars 2 – Atmosphere everywhere!

The capitals in Guild Wars 2 are nothing short of cool, bursting with beauty and ingenuity. There are few RPGs and MMOs that can match GW2’s locales. For example, there’s the newly built trading city of Lion’s Arch, which has seen its fair share of suffering. Lion’s Arch is a great place with lots of hidden corners and surprises. Plus, there are pirates everywhere – what more could you want?

No less cool, but very cold, is the capital of the Norn, Hoelbrak. Ice and snow on every corner, plus wild animals and the four great halls of the spirits of the wild. As soon as you enter one of these halls, you’re right in the middle of a really good role-playing game, because that’s exactly how you imagine a fantasy world to be! Probably the most popular city in Guild Wars 2 is Divinity’s , the metropolis of the people. Here you get everything you want. A huge palace, great gardens, winding streets and other beautiful places.

Column: Lord of the Rings and Co

There are so many other role-playing games that we could continue this list endlessly. Whether Star Wars: The Old Republic with Nar Shaddaa, Final Fantasy 14 with Gridania or Limsa Lominsa, or The Elder Scrolls Online with Abah’s Landing. Of course, these are all just examples, the possibilities are simply too great. However, Lord of the Rings Online gets a very special diligence star, because almost all cities here are extremely atmospheric and well elaborated. Particularly beautiful in this regard are Bree and, of course, the White City of Minas Tirith! But of course everyone has their own preferences! And that’s exactly what we want to know from you.

What are your favorite cities you have visited in an MMO so far? And why did this particular place captivate and inspire you? Tell us what you think in the comments!
