WoW WotLK Classic: What you need to know about cold weather flight and flying
The one with WoW: Burning Crusade introduced flying Is essential in Outland to be able to reach certain places at all. The situation is similar in Northrend of Wrath of the Lich King Classic. If you don’t want to be constantly ported somewhere by your fellow players (to the entrance area of Naxxramas, for example), then you should unlock the flight license for Northrend with your hero as soon as possible. In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about flying, the cold-weather flying license, and buying mounts and flying mounts in WotLK Classic.
All characters who have reached level 77 and at least Experienced riding or Flight shape (applies to Druids only, of course) can get the Cold Weather Flight Acquire:
By the way, Hira also offers you the Folio of the cold weather flight which allows your Twinks to learn Cold Weather Flight starting at level 68 (also for 1,000 gold each). To make this work, you may of course mail the tome to your secondary characters.
What else changes in flying?
Basically, the following riding skills are still available in WotLK Classic:
If you have not yet learned to fly fast on all characters (Skilled rider) for 5,000 gold each, we have several pieces of good news for you. Good news number 1: Slow flight mounts no longer have a speed of 60 percent, but a speed of 150 percent. This eliminates the advantage of Skilled rider no longer looks quite so enormous.
Good news number 2: Riding skills and mounts will be partly cheaper and available earlier with the pre-patch of WotLK Classic!
- Inexperienced rider from level 20 for about 4 gold (minus reputation discount, plus about 1 gold for the mount)
- Skilled rider From level 40 for about 50 gold (minus reputation discount, plus a fast ground mount for about 10 gold).
- Experienced rider from level 60 for 800 gold (minus reputation discount)
- Skilled rider from level 70 for 5,000 gold (minus reputation discount)
It is also worth noting that the reputation discount for flight licenses was not yet active in TBC Classic. Depending on how motivated you were playing in Outland, you may be able to get a new license from the teachers located there (NEW: Hargen Bronze Wing in the honorary feast and Wind rider Jahubo in Thrallmar), achieve more favorable prices than with the following teachers from Nordend:
- Hira Snow Dawn, which you will find on Krasus’ landing site in Dalaran (no reputation discount!).
- Roxi ram rocket in camp K3 in the Storm Peaks (no call discount!).
- Pilot Vic at the river bifurcation in the Sholazar Basin (no call discount!).
- Maigra Sharpfeather in the Valianz Fortress (Alliance) in the Borean Tundra (reputation discount possible – faction Expedition of the Valianz).
- Wind Rider Samamba in the Warsong Fortress (Horde) in the Borean Tundra (reputation discount possible – faction Expedition of the Horde).
The latter two teachers have the Cold Weather Flight by the way, is not on offer, which is why you always have to pay the full 1,000 gold for the Northrend license. When buying Skilled Rider you can save up to 1,000 gold (with an awesome reputation). Information about the expeditions of Horde and Valianz can be found in our large Overview of the reputation factions of Northrend.
What to do without cold weather flight?
When you reach level 77, you can use a kind of rental service in Storm Peak, or more precisely, in Camp K3. There you can get from the Honest Max but only a flight mount with 60 percent travel speed, which you can only use in Storm Peak, Sholazar Basin, and Icecrown. Naxxramas or Thousand Winter cannot be reached with the animal.
The No-Fly Zones of Northrend
In Northrend, away from instances and indoor areas, there are some areas in the open world that are allergic to flying players: the capital Dalaran, the area inside (and above!) the Transitus Shield in Kaltarra (Borean Tundra), and the PvP zone Thousand Winters.
If you still fly over Dalaran, you will be taken from the mount after a short warning and will be hit with the effect Parachute thanks to which you will land safely. The situation was different during our tests over Thousand Winters and the Transitus Shield: The mount disappears immediately and the Azeroth hero, who was flying a moment ago, plummets unchecked into the depths. If you want to take to the skies from the flying city of Dalaran, you’ll first have to walk or ride to the landing pad of Krasus.
Here’s what else you need to know!
With the pre-patch of WotLK Classic you can expect a nice innovation: In the character window there is a new tab: “Companion”. There you will find all “learned” mounts, so you don’t have to carry them around in your inventory anymore.
In addition, of course, the expansion brings tens of new mounts into the game. For two especially desirable flying mounts, our colleague Nobbie has already prepared the guides for you:
