CoD: Black Ops 4 – Traditional single player campaign was never planned

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 should never get a traditional single player campaign.

There are solo modes in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, but a true single-player campaign is missing this year for the time in the history of the shooter series. It was never supposed to be part of the title either, developer Treyarch now tells Polygon. Instead, the title focuses on competitive multiplayer modes, a new Battle Royale mode and three cooperative zombie scenarios.

What’s left for solo players? If you want to play alone, you can play the zombie scenarios with computer-controlled bots or take a look at the single-player challenge missions. These serve as story-based practice battles, but are not embedded in a campaign. Dan Bunting, one of Treyarch’s studio heads, explains why solo players are largely left out in the cold:

“When we started making this game, we didn’t have this idea of doing a traditional campaign. That just wasn’t part of the plan. “

Rather, he said, the goal was to create a game that could be played with friends across the board. That, Bunting says, was “the mission from day one.”

Previously, there were increased rumors that Treyarch had planned the campaign but couldn’t finish it in time. However, Bunting’s statement contradicts this theory. Rather, he claims to want to do the community a favor.

Looking at the Black Ops series and how gamers are interacting and engaging with the games, he says changes in the industry are a big part of the whole. Everything is being understood more and more as a social experience, Bunting said.

“We obviously have a very large zombie following in the Black Ops franchise. And when we look at how they interact with the game, whether it’s in the game itself, online, on forums, through streamers, YouTubers … everybody interacts as a community and that’s a pretty massive phenomenon. When you see that kind of passion for our game that we don’t think we’re serving enough, we want to make sure we have more of that. “

Black Ops 4 becomes a live game

The same was true for multiplayer, he said. When multiplayer was new in Call of Duty, 10 percent of players played competitive multiplayer. In 2015 and 2016 it was 90 percent Of the players. “When you look at it from the perspective of doing more for players and how they play the game, it’s a pretty easy decision.”

Let there also be a challenging decision but Treyarch is not afraid of that. They are adapting to the realities of the market. Black Ops 4 is designed to adapt and evolve over time, Bunting said. In addition, Treyarch wants to “support the game like we never have before,” he said.

Bunting wouldn’t say exactly what the roadmap would look like after the first 12 months, but in the year following release, “unprecedented support” is expected to provide plenty of content for players.

Opinion: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – Innovations only with Treyarch.
