Casuals & pros argue over changes

Hunter gets a massive nerf with the new patch for Rainbow Six: Siege.

Ubisoft has released a new update for Rainbow Six: Siege with patch Y5S1.2, which makes numerous changes to the operators.

Many of these changes alter the meta-game, including toning down the extremely popular defender Hunter – even though the professional e-sports Challenger League is in the middle of its eleventh – Season .

Thick nerfs for the most played operator

The defender hunter has been one of the most popular operators for years and has had to take some nerfs in the past: his damage was reduced, his ACOG visor removed. Now comes the next change.

What happens to hunters? With the latest update, Hunter’s movement speed has now been reduced from 3 to 2, but his armor has been increased from 1 to 2. He is now a balanced 2/2 operator.

What does that mean in concrete terms? The slower speed not only weakens his ability to roam – that is, to tactically leave the Objective to flank attackers.

Are there any other disadvantages? As YouTuber Rogue-9 explains in his video, the TTK (Time To Kill) is similar for operators with 1 and 2 armor points, but the so-called Peeker’s Advantage – i.e. the playful ping advantage when leaning around corners – is significantly lower due to the reduced speed:

There are more big operator changes

Three changes in particular are the focus of community discussion:

  • Buck loses his Frag Grenades and gets Claymores in return, also increased the ammo capacity of the Skeleton Key Shotgun.
  • Mozzie loses his Super Shorty Shotgun as a secondary weapon and from now on carries only a pistol as a backup. The Super Shorty ends up with Castle.
  • Ying can now carry four of her candela stun grenades instead of three. She loses her claymores and gains smoke grenades instead.

Patch is controversial among fans

Rainbow Six players have a very ambivalent view of the update, with an ever-deepening divide emerging between regular players and pros.

What do casual & ranked players say? Due to the insanely high pick rate of Jäger, his nerf does not meet with approval everywhere. Ubisoft breaks here with habits of the users, who knew Buck just only with grenades and hunter only as a 3-speed operator. Balancing seems to be the decisive factor for the developers – and not the traditional identity of the operators.

What do e-sports enthusiasts say? In the tournament environment, on the other hand, the utility meta prevails, with defenders dominating the map with their countless traps and gadgets. These problems are hardly solved in the new patch, because despite nerfs, defensive operators remain extremely strong and continue to block attackers with nasty trap and gadget combos. Mozzie and Mute, for example, continue to work together to reliably kill attacker drones. Like this writes pro player Pengu from G2 Esports:

“There is not a single gadget change, although this is where the biggest problem lies. Wamai, Goyo, Mozzie – they all have way too powerful gadgets, and yet they’re screwing with weapons and secondary equipment.”

On the other hand, he sees the hunter change in a positive light in an interview with Gaimer.net:

“Hunter as a 2/2 operator is a good thing. I wish every operator was like that and they all had the same speed – like in most other person shooters. There could be exceptions for Rook or Caveira, for example. But overall, I think it’s good.”

Why is Ubisoft doing this?

In a recent podcast, lead game designer Jean-Baptiste Hallé gave at least a brief answer:

Despite all the balancing, the focus of the development is still on the fun of the game – and always playing against the same operator (hunter) is simply no longer fun at some point.
