Car soccer tried out on the smartphone

  • is a successful game for console and PC.
  • Now comes Sideswipe, a spin-off for iPhones and Android smartphones.
  • I tried out the game.

Several hundred hours I’ve already invested in Rocket on PC over the past few years. The developers have managed to pull off this particular mix: Easy to learn, hard to master. It’s a perfect game for casuals who just want to play a round (which usually only takes a good five minutes), but also for hardcore gamers who want to climb the leaderboard.

It’s no wonder Rocket League is such a huge success. Developer decided to take a bold step some time ago: To bring the well-known IP to the mobile screen. It’s not the first studio to dare to do so.

In principle, there are two ways to go about this: port the game to the smartphone as is, and hope that the controls somehow work – like with or Hearthstone – or develop a special mobile version – like with : Wild Rift or Call of Duty: Mobile.

Rocket League in two dimensions

Psyonix has gone the second way and completely turned the game concept on its head with . For Android and iOS, one dimension was simply deleted: The name “Sideswipe” perhaps already suggests that this is a 2D game acts.

Doesn’t that make it a lot easier? Not at all. There are three controls: a virtual stick on the left, a button each for boost and jump on the right. Boost charges automatically as long as you’re on the ground with your tires. Tapping around on the screen is enough for trying things out and for a quick round in between, but players with professional ambitions will certainly prefer to reach for a controller with physical buttons.

Rocket League Sideswipe: Maximum of two players per team

While up to four players per team can compete on PC and console, there is a maximum of two in Sideswipe. Three modes are currently available: Duel (1vs1), Doubles (2vs2) and a Basketball mode (2vs2). If you want to train before you play against real players, you can also play against bots. By the way, one round lasts two minutes.

Speaking of which, an Epic Games account is required for online play, though an offline mode is also available. The login via Epic brings access to the friends list, the The garage has to be completely refilled in Sideswipe.. Although the game is free of charge in principle, Psyonix will of course offer cosmetic content here.

Good ratings in the App Stores

The game is obviously very well received by the community. With a current average of 4.6 stars in the App Store and 4 stars in the Google Play Store, the developers can certainly be happy about a successful launch. “I’ve played RL on the Pc before, and now I have it on my phone. I find the controls pleasant and easy to use. It’s a really good game!” comments one Android user, for example.

What about you: are you already a fan of Rocket League and have been waiting for the mobile spinoff? Would this be your first entry into car soccer? Or are you not interested in it at all anyway?
