Call of Duty Zombies – What’s next?

The release of Modern Warfare II is imminent and every zombies lover knows exactly what this means. The popular game mode might not get any new content for a while and the waiting starts all over again. In this article, we will also go back in time and take a look back, as well as write about the mechanics and Easter Eggs of the mode. Of course, we will also summarize what the standalone game and Zombies Chronicles 2 are all about.

The Review

Zombies was originally called Nazi Zombies and was developed by Treyarch. This mode first appeared in : World at War and enjoyed great popularity among the community at the beginning. It was followed by sequels in subsequent Call of Duty parts:

  • Black Ops
  • Black Ops II
  • Black Ops III
  • Black Ops IV
  • Black Ops Cold War
  • Vanguard

In addition, Zombies in Infinite Warfare premiered and was released for the first time in a CoD where Treyarch was not the lead developer and was titled: “Zombies in Spaceland”.

This was followed by another spin-off in Call of Duty: WWII, developed by Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games, titled: “Call of Duty WWII Nazi Zombies”.

In total, Zombies consists of thirty-two maps; The first, second, fourth, fifth, seventh, nineteenth, twentieth, twenty-first and thirty-second cards feature Nazi zombies; the third and twenty-second cards feature the Imperial Japanese Army; the sixth, twenty-eighth and thirty-first cards feature American civilians, military and scientists; the eighth card features Soviet scientists, cosmonauts and military; the ninth card features Siberian sailors and divers, on the tenth map there are Himalayan civilians, on the eleventh map there are astronauts and American military, on the twelfth map there are various American civilians, on the thirteenth map there are Russian Spetsnaz and American zombies with various ailments, including zombies in protective suits, on the fourteenth map there are Chinese civilian and military zombies, on the fifteenth and twenty-seventh maps there are American prisoners and guards, in the sixteenth there are Western barmaids, gold seekers and cowboys in a continentally displaced Angola, in the seventeenth German soldiers from World War I, crusaders and medieval Templars in occupied France, in the eighteenth American civilians from the 1940s, in the twenty-third Red Army soldiers, in the twenty-fourth various zombies from previous maps, including Night of the Undead, Origins and Shadows of Evil, in the twenty-fifth there are British passengers and British crew members, in the twenty-sixth Roman slaves, in the twenty-ninth British party guests, in the thirtieth Greek hoplites and civilians, in the thirty-third and thirty-fifth a mixture of Nazi and Soviet zombies, and in the thirty-fourth a mixture of Vietnamese and Soviet zombies.

The mechanics

We don’t want to go too deep into mechanics, but briefly give some insight into 3 categories: Life, Number and Points.

Life

The zombies get stronger from round to round and get more life points. So the zombies have 150 life in the first round and this is increased by 100 each round until round 9. So the zombies have a life of 950 up to point.

At the start of round 10, the zombies’ lives increase by 10% each round. So at round 15 they have about 1683 life. By round 30 they have 7030 and by round 50 they have 47,295! If you manage to get to round 100 (which is a difficult task in the older CoD), zombies with a life of 5.5 million life points stand in your way.

Since it is no longer possible for the engine to trade the life points after a certain point, the round 200 is the end and the life points are no longer increased.

Number

The number of zombies increase in each round. Nevertheless, the maximum number of zombies per round in World at War (before the map “The Giant”) was 24.

In “The Giant” as well as in the coming parts, this changed. Unlike health, zombies do not multiply linearly but according to a certain key. Unlike the health of the zombies, their number does not grow linearly but follows these formulas after round 10, where R is the current round and is rounded up if the result is not a whole number:

  • 1 player: 0.000058 * R^3 + 0.074032 * R^2 + 0.718119 *R + 14.738699
  • 2 players: 0.000054 * R^3 + 0.169717 * R^2 + 0.541627 *R + 15.917041
  • 3 players: 0.000169 * R^3 + 0.238079 * R^2 + 1.307276 *R + 21.291046
  • 4 players: 0.000225 * R^3 + 0.314314 * R^2 + 1.835712 *R + 27.596132

This results in a steady increase between rounds; in a solo game there are 33 zombies in round 10, 60 in round 20, 105 in round 30, 243 in round 50, 510 in round 75, 885 in round 100, and so on.

Point system

A point system is integrated in Zombies. With these points doors can be opened and weapons can be bought. Furthermore, the player has the possibility with these points to activate traps, to punch the weapon and much more.

Examples of actions that earn points:

  • Non-lethal hit: 10 points
  • Fatal torso hit: 60 points
  • Deadly limb hit: 50 points
  • Deadly explosive hit: 50 points
  • Fatal hit on the neck: 70 points
  • Deadly hit on the head: 100 points
  • Deadly close combat: 130 points
  • Repair a barricade: 10 points

The story

Overall, there are three primary storylines that occur in Zombies. The first is the Aether storyline released, which began in Call of Duty: World at War, spanned Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and Call of Duty: Black Ops III, and concluded in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The story is based on conspiracy theories about secret Nazi technology and spans a huge and expansive timeline that spans multiple timelines and universes. The story is about an ancient conflict between two primitive peoples – the Preservers and the Apothicons – and four soldiers trapped in a time loop, who try to repair the great damage caused to time and space by an extremely powerful element that changes the cosmos, through dimension jumps.

The second of these storylines was the Chaos Story, a completely different storyline that had nothing to do with Aether and only appeared in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The story is based on various real-world mythologies (mainly Norse, Egyptian, Celtic and Greco-Roman). The story revolves around the disappearance of an archaeologist by a mysterious occult group and the attempts of his daughter (as well as three known allies) to save him.

The third of these storylines is the Dark Aether Saga, a sequel to Aether, introduced in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and expanded in Call of Duty: Vanguard in the form of a prequel. The story is set in a new universe that follows the events of the Aether story, and therefore includes some recurring elements and characters. The overall plot follows the Nazis’ experiments with a dark alternate dimension inhabited by hellish creatures and ancient gods, and the consequences of breaking the dimensional membrane between the two worlds.

Easter Eggs

Zombie mode is known for its variety of Easter Eggs that can be solved. Compared to Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard, the Easter Eggs used to be a lot harder to solve and find. In the other parts, it used to be harder to find and solve the Easter Eggs. Shadow of Evil was the most difficult Easter Egg so far. It took just under 5 days and 20 hours to find and solve the Easter Egg. It should be added here that it would have taken even longer in all likelihood. Because the last step was found out by a dataminer and sent to an East Egg Hunter via donation.

We also have a list for you with the 10 longest Main Easter Eggs:

  1. Shadows of Evil – 5 days, 20 hours
  2. Originis – 2 days, 17 hours
  3. The Iron Dragon – 2 days, 16 hours
  4. The Rise – 2 days, 14 hours
  5. Tranzit – 2 days, 12 hours
  6. Buried – 1 day, 12 hours
  7. Call of the Dead (Co-Op) – 1 day, 3 hours
  8. Mob of the Dead – 23 hours
  9. Shangri-La – 13 hours
  10. Call of the Dead (Solo) – 13 hours

In comparison, the Easter Eggs in Black Ops Cold War took less than 10 hours to solve.

Certain maps have main quests as well as side quests. However, it also happens that certain maps only have a side quest. Known side quests are those where a song is played after successfully completing the Easter Egg!

How many of the side quests have not yet been found is not yet clear. Just about 1 month ago a new Side-Easter-Egg was found in Nazi Zombies (WWII). It took thus scarce 5 years Until this Easter Egg was found. See for yourself:

This is a question that many are asking. What about zombies and when will it continue?

Standalone Game

There has been a rumor going around for quite some time that we are to get a standalone game for Zombies. These rumors have been going around for more than 1 year now.

We know that Treyarch is recruiting for a project that sounds quite like this standalone experience.

Activision currently has many major Call of Duty games in development, from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2 to a special mobile version of the title – but as you might expect, there are other projects that have yet to be officially confirmed.

One of them may have been in the rumor mill for over a year now – more than a few times we’ve heard reports that a standalone Call of Duty: Zombies game is in development, and recent developments seem to lend some credence to that. Treyarch, the studio that developed the mode, is expanding its team and looking for new employees for various positions, and it seems that a lot of this recruitment is focused on something related to zombies.

Kevin Drew – associate design director at Treyarch and responsible for all things zombies – hinted in a retweet to Treyarch’s recent hiring call that the rumored zombies project could be real.

“We have big plans for Zombies and are looking to grow the team to make it happen,” Drew wrote. “There are several open design positions for various experience levels, so it’s a good time to apply if you’re interested!”

Earlier this year, it was reported that Call of Duty would break its long-standing annual release cycle next year, skipping the premium 2023 installment. At the time, Activision said it was working on an “exciting lineup of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year, and the year after.” Whether a standalone Zombies project will be part of that remains to be seen.

Zombies Chronicles 2

Once again the rumors are going around about Zombie Chronicles. However, if this really comes to pass, it’s possible that we’ll get some changes.

The Call of Duty zombies community is currently in the worst situation it has ever been in. Even in the early days of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, the mode was doing better than it is now. The vast majority of content creators and players have abandoned Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies because the mode lacks content and is too different from what fans are used to.

Besides hoping that Treyarch’s next Call of Duty game will restore Zombies’ reputation, leakers have given fans a reason to believe that Zombies Chronicles 2 will be released in 2023. With next year’s Call of Duty title seemingly delayed to give Treyarch more time, and Activision touting new premium content to keep fans engaged, the hope is that maps like Die Rise and Buried will be remastered. While it remains to be seen if this will actually happen, fans should expect some changes to these maps beyond a visual overhaul.

Potential Changes

If Zombies Chronicles 2 does become a reality, it’s hard to imagine it being released as part of the highly controversial Call of Duty: Vanguard. So the options available to Treyarch are the rumored standalone Zombies game or a DLC release for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Since Black Ops 3 housed the original Zombies Chronicles, it’s easy to imagine Black Ops Cold War serving as the home of Zombies Chronicles 2.

If this is the case, then Black Ops Cold War’s core systems will be introduced into the remastered maps, instantly changing the style of play that fans will experience. For example, an already easy map like Buried could lose its low difficulty once the armor system is integrated. Likewise, an improved version of Stamin-Up removes the falling damage in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies, so the main reason that makes Die Rise both fun and frustrating would be removed.

Much like the original Zombies Chronicles used Black Ops 3 weapons, Zombies Chronicles 2 would likely use a lot of Black Ops Cold War weapons. While there would be special exceptions for Marvel weapons and map-specific weapons like the Remington New Model Army, Black Ops 2’s iconic weapons would likely not appear in the remaster. Players could end up using Buried’s chalk to place weapons like the Krig 6 in place of the beloved AN-94, which would take some of the joy out of the original map.

To be upfront: Changes are not always a bad thing. The original version of TranZit is considered by many to be Treyarch’s worst turn-based map, though many of its problems were related to the limitations of last-gen consoles. A new version of TranZit could allow Treyarch to realize the full potential of the map and bring their original vision to the world. Less problematic fog, limited Denizen spawns, and ways to better counter lava damage are just a few ways the revamped map could be better than the 2012 version. Of all the possible remakes, a remake of TranZit would probably feel the most different, though that would hardly be a drawback.

The original Zombies Chronicles offered beautiful remasters that stayed true to the original maps, but there’s no denying that they played differently than the old versions due to a different movement system and the inclusion of gobblegum. In the hypothetical Zombies Chronicles 2, players should expect something similar. The core of the maps will still be there, and the layouts will be the same, but the use of modern Call of Duty Zombies mechanics would inevitably lead to an experience that feels a bit different.

My conclusion

I myself am a passionate zombies player and Easter Egg addict. But I’m honest, since the release of Vanguard I have hardly ever played Zombies. I played the new maps briefly and then always had to realize that Zombies is no longer what it used to be and the mode was totally fucked up.

Treyarch has to do something, we are all aware of that. Because if it goes on like this, then the new zombies content will not be under a good star.

I hope that Vanguard Zombies was just a small gesture to the community and the developers are working in the background on a Zombies as we know it through Black Ops 3 etc..

We all know that the Easter Eggs will never be the same as Black Ops 3 or Black Ops 4. The Easter Eggs will probably always remain guided and simplify the search for the next steps.

I really hope the rumors about Zombies Chronicles 2 and the standalone game are true. Am being cautious there though and not leaning too far out the window. I will believe it only when it is officially confirmed.

Zombies has always been the main reason for me to pick up a new CoD and have spent days, weeks if not months of my life in that mode. That the mode has now entered such a downward spiral makes me sad and really secretly hope that the mode will find back to old form, although I can not really believe this.

We can be curious where the journey goes. Let’s hope that the developers now finally find back to old form.

What do you think of the current state of Zombies and what do you wish for the future? Let us know in the comments!
