Call of Duty: Vanguard does not need as much hard drive space as previous games

Publisher Activision Blizzard, which is responsible for the game referenced in this article, is currently involved in a lawsuit involving a workplace culture that allegedly enables sexual harassment, abuse and discrimination.

Activision has announced that : Vanguard no longer takes up as much space on console and PC hard drives as previous versions of the series.

Activision made the announcement via the official Call of Duty account on Twitter, calling it “good news for hard drives everywhere.” The tweet doesn’t go into further detail, only explaining that the “new on-demand texture streaming technology” will ensure that ’s install size is “significantly less than previous Call of Duty releases.”

In fact, this technology will apparently “save up to 30-50% of hard drive space on next-gen consoles and PCs.”

Since this announcement, Activision has confirmed the estimated file sizes and required storage for the game on various consoles [opensinnewtab). As promised, the numbers are significantly reduced compared to the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War last November, ranging from 30% to 50%, with PlayStation consoles requiring significantly more memory than Xbox.

In the post, Activision also notes that players “will have the opportunity to manage storage space and reduce the overall file size of the game during or after the pre-load.” Information for PC is marked as “coming soon.”

  • : 64.13 GB download with 89.84 GB required storage space
  • : 54.65 GB download with 93.12 GB required storage space
  • Xbox Series X/S: 61 GB download with 61 GB required storage space
  • Xbox One: 56.6 GB download with 56.6 GB required storage space

This follows a reduction in the file size of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone earlier this year after an update that included “improvements to the overall content management system […] by optimizing data and streamlining the content packs required for individual game modes.”

Analysis: Thanks for the reminder

Call of Duty games have long been notorious for how much disk space they take up.

Just earlier this year, PS4 (opens in new tab)-Owners with 500GB who had Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone installed were warned by Activision that they “may need to free up space” and “delete some unused game content.”

This is certainly welcome news for Call of Duty fans on PS5 [opensinnewtab), Xbox Series X (opens in new tab)/S and PC, who may have been anxiously looking at their hard drives in the run-up to the November 5 release date.

While expanding the available storage is now an option on at least the PS5 and Xbox Series X, it’s not exactly cheap right now, and for those who don’t have it, space is still at a premium. The idea of having to tell visitors “No, no, that’s not my Xbox, that’s my Call of Duty machine” is probably over.
