Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 comes from the Activision studio Infinity Ward. They’ve been working on various CoD titles there for 20 years, and by now every single Activision development studio is involved with the shooter franchise. But apparently it doesn’t have to stay that way, as a new job posting shows. Infinity Ward is looking for people for a project that doesn’t sound like Call of Duty at all and is assigned to a completely different genre.

Here’s what it’s about: A job ad is currently causing a stir. It’s not every day that a studio like Infinity Ward suddenly turns its attention to a fundamentally different genre. Instead of exclusively developing first person shooters like CoD, an open world RPG is probably next in line. A narrative director is being sought to work on the non-linear, but high-quality project, which is supposed to be a “cinematic experience”.

This doesn’t sound like CoD: The job ad is now no longer online, because the right person has apparently already been found. But what you could read there sounds quite different from what we know from Infinity Ward so far. It doesn’t sound like Call of Duty at first – but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. It’s possible that we’re simply dealing with a CoD spinoff that takes place in the same universe, but serves a different genre.
Is something completely new coming? Of course, it would also be conceivable that Infinity Ward finally wants to and is allowed to do something different. The chances are not bad that the whole thing could have to do with the planned takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. It’s possible that Infinity Ward doesn’t necessarily have to release the next CoD right after that, because Microsoft has enough other irons in the fire and needs a wider variety of titles for Game Pass.

Do not rejoice too soon! So far, we know far too little to be able to make any precise statements about this mysterious new game. Accordingly, you should keep your anticipation in check. If the narrative designer has just been hired, the completion of the game is still quite far away anyway.
