Call of Duty 2022 comes normally, 2023 then pause [Update]

Now updated: According to a new report, the shooter series will not get a new spin-off in 2023. This year’s Call of Duty is still scheduled for a regular release, but next year’s title has been postponed. This is reported by the news portal Bloomberg.

Original article from 23.02.2022: Renowned video game journalist Jason Schreier reports for Bloomberg that the decision has already been made not to release a Call of Duty title next year. He points to internal sources that Activision’s executives made this decision after a recent series installment failed to meet expectations. This is most likely a reference to last year’s Call of Duty Vanguard, which failed to match 2020’s Black Ops Cold War in sales figures. According to Bloomberg’s sources, some executives believe Activision is releasing new Call of Duty games too quickly.

The postponement would make 2023 the first year since 2004 that no title from the Call of Duty series would be released. The first release was in 2003 for the PC. Activision would thus also miss the 20th anniversary of the series. The next entry would come from Treyarch – Sledgehammer took over last year’s Call of Duty Vanguard… and Infinity Ward is developing this year’s title.

Activision itself has since responded to Bloomberg’s report with its own statement from a spokesperson. According to the statement, Activision is said to have an “exciting lineup of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year and beyond.” According to the publisher, reports to the contrary are simply incorrect. Activision plans to announce more details “as soon as the time is right.”

“We have an exciting lineup of premium and free Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year, and the year after. Reports that say otherwise are wrong. We look forward to sharing more details with you when the time comes.” We look forward to seeing what Activision announces specifically for 2022 and 2023.
