It was quiet around Overwatch for a long time. Since the successor Overwatch 2 was announced in 2019, the first part fell more and more into oblivion. First they pulled most of the developer resources to work on the successor, then in April 2021 the Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan left the company and a few months later the sexism lawsuit of the California Department of Fair Employment shook the developer and publisher Activision-Blizzard, which was then bought by Microsoft in January 2022.
With all this hullabaloo, Overwatch 2, or even its predecessor, was hard to think about. While there was a sign of life at Blizzcon 2021 that made me feel quite positive, we didn’t hear much more. That was a shame, because Overwatch is still one of the best hero shooters for me. Because Overwatch gives me something with its team play and the different modes that the more CS:GO-oriented Valorant or the battle royale Apex Legends can’t offer me.

Just when we’ve probably all pushed Overwatch to the back of our minds, the developers surprise us with a new sign of life – in two respects. First, there’s the announced closed beta, which you can sign up for and join if you’re lucky enough to be selected.

On the other hand, I didn’t have to exercise patience, but was allowed to play the contents of the beta a few weeks in advance. What I learned about PvP in the process makes Blizzard’s current Overwatch strategy seem smart as hell. Even if it won’t fulfill the wishes you probably have the most.

Important: The content of the closed beta is not the hotly anticipated single player content of Overwatch 2, but a kind of update to the already existing PvP mode in Overwatch 1.
