The big sexism scandal at Activision Blizzard has serious consequences for the California-based studio in 2022. The fifth – Season of Overwatch starts in May, and the e-sports league should actually really take off again in 2022 with Overwatch 2 and without Corona. But apparently Blizzard has big problems finding sponsors: None of the old sponsors wants to renew their contracts, and negotiations with new ones are still ongoing.
This is the situation:
- In the summer of 2021, a sexism scandal at Blizzard came to light. Women were allegedly treated badly at the studio for years. Men had sexually harassed women; they were paid less and promoted less than men. In addition, women did the work, while some men used their time in the office to drink and sleep it off.
- The sexism scandal spread widely at Activision Blizzard. They fired the president of Blizzard, hired a new female boss, but she left. Employees protested, demanding the head of Activision Blizzard’s CEO – who ultimately sold the company to Microsoft.
- With some delay, Blizzard now notices another consequence of the scandal: the Overwatch League does not find sponsors. The old are gone, with new one one negotiates still. The league is supposed to really take off in 2022.

New – Season in Overwatch is important for Blizzard
Why is the – Season so important in Overwatch? – Season 5 of the Overwatch League is scheduled to start in May 2022. The – Season is important for several reasons:
- It is the first live – Season in North America since 2020. Actually, Overwatch is a “live game”. Teams belong to fixed cities. The games are supposed to be played on site as a spectacle – but Corona made that impossible for 2 years.
- On the other hand, it’s supposed to be the first – Season playing Overwatch 2, the game’s new sequel. That’s when the first beta tests are underway.
- The Overwatch League is a huge investment for the teams involved. After all, the teams had to buy into the league for several million US dollars. After the Corona years, it is important that the league now becomes a commercial success. First the hype around Fortnite was a problem, then Corona, now the league should take off.
Was the brains behind Overwatch for years: Jeff Kaplan. He’s gone.
This is the problem: As reported by the Washington Post, Blizzard has not found sponsors two months before the start of the – Season . The big names like Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and State Farm would have paused their advertising deals with the Overwatch League after the sexism scandal in the summer of 2021.
None of those sponsors plan to advertise with the league again, the companies told The Post when asked. Comcast, last – Season ‘s Internet service provider, also has no plans to work with Blizzard, they said.
None of the companies explicitly say it’s because of the sexism scandal, but that assumption suggests itself. So far, Blizzard has not listed any sponsors for the Overwatch League 2022.
Blizzard says Overwatch League now to usher in “new era”
This is what Blizzard says: When asked by the Post, Blizzard says it is “still in the midst of discussions with potential partners,” not only old sponsors but new ones as well.
According to the head of Overwatch 2, players would already practice with an early version of the sequel. You get a lot of feedback. Everything is going better than ever before.
– Season 5 is now set to be the – Season that takes the Overwatch League into a “new era”.
Overwatch League plagues many problems
That’s what’s behind it: If you believe the director of Overwatch 2, the signs at Blizzard are totally on departure. However, the news that one hears from Blizzard does not fit in with this:
- With Jeff Kaplan, “the head” of Overwatch 2 is gone.
- For Overwatch 2, they crippled the development of the well-run part 1 for years
- Pros are already bitching about Overwatch 2 because they went from 6 players down to 5 players per team, putting “off tanks” out of work
- the game’s longtime casters are complaining that they haven’t heard anything about the league and are left high and dry
But according to Blizzard, everything is apparently going totally great.
