Blizzard shows PC setup for big tournament

The is Blizzard’s league for the team shooter. But the place where the pros compete against each other doesn’t really look professional to many.

What kind of tournament is this? The Overwatch League is a professional eSports league for the team shooter Overwatch. It regularly hosts matches in which Overwatch professionals compete against each other.

Meanwhile, the 2022 – Season is almost half over and for this reason, the “Overwatch League Mid- Season Madness” has been launched. Not only is there a unique skin for the character Mercy, but there are also impressions of the tournament room.

But exactly this room, where the pros are supposed to play against each other, is criticized by many people. Because this place is anything but professional and rather reminds of LAN parties of the decade before last.

Official setting for professional players feels like it’s from 2008

What exactly is it about? A professional Overwatch player named Poko had posted on Twitter the picture of the competition site and wrote to it, “Tomorrow it will be sure…. Exciting?!!”. This had been followed by many comments about the official setting. That was not appropriate for professional gamers.

What exactly is being criticized? Many users criticize that the whole room is simply unsuitable for competitive :

  • The team tables are much too close to each other. This guarantees that you can hear everything the opposing team is talking about.
  • If you put your feet out, you would catch the opponents on the other side.
  • The cable management also has to take criticism. Because that doesn’t even seem to exist.
  • Many also find the rounded tabletop no longer modern.

Are there also positive voices? There are also people who don’t see it all quite so dramatically. For example, the pros should be allowed to use very good gaming headsets that offer reliable noise-canceling. This way, you won’t be able to hear anything from the opposing teams.

Overwatch 2 is already played as an e-sport – But Blizzard bans ingenious play as buggy exploit.

Some doubt this setup will really be used in tournament

How realistic is this situation really? However, there are also hints that the setup will not be used in this state. So you can watch an official video from the Overwatch League on YouTube, and here you also have a brief look at the setting. And here it looks different (via YouTube.com):

  • The tables have been moved further apart.
  • A fabric base was added on the tables for better ergonomics
  • Also, the table tops no longer look curved in the video.
  • The cables have disappeared behind black tarpaulins attached to the tables.

Likewise, if you compare the picture of Overwatch player Poko with the YouTube video, you’ll notice that many pros are using and have connected their own hardware. This casts doubt on whether the Overwatch League pros are really playing on the setup shown, or whether Blizzard isn’t making some adjustments before the matches.

That would at least explain the big differences. After all, most of the community’s criticisms can no longer be found in the video.

And if you’re wondering why there’s only room for 5 people on both sides, then you’ve missed the most important change in Overwatch 2. Because the developers have reduced the team size in Overwatch to 5v5. And that has a lasting effect on the entire gaming experience:
