Blizzard loses 2 million players in 3 months – eSportsNews eSports Overwatch

In a current financial report for Q4 2021, Activision Blizzard cheers its many successes in games like World of Warcraft, Hearthstone or Diablo II Resurrected. However, the bare figures do not match the jubilant news, because Blizzard alone loses 2 million players again compared to the last quarter.

What number are we talking about?

  • The number is called “MAU”, the monthly active users.
  • This number is heavily biased in favor of the company: If a person logs into any game for even one second in a month, that person counts as “one active user”. If a person logs into two different games, they already count as “two users”.
  • Activision Blizzard determines the numbers for a quarter by counting the monthly active users and then dividing by the number of months in the quarter.

WoW, , Diablo 3: Blizzard has lost almost every 3rd player

How is the number developing at Blizzard?

The number is developing poorly since 2018:

  • In Q3 2018, Blizzard still had 38 million active users
  • In the 4th quarter of 2020, it was only 29 million users
  • In the 3rd quarter of 2021, there were still 26 million users
  • Now the number has dropped to 24 million users in Q4 2021

So Blizzard lost two million active players in 3 months, five million players last year.

Blizzard is 5 million users short of last year’s total – with the whole of Activision Blizzard down by as much as 26 million.

Blizzard celebrates its own games with success stories

Such are the success stories of Blizzard:

But the actual reports that Blizzard puts out don’t match these numbers. Because these are exclusively success messages.

So they say:

  • WoW had its strongest retention in a decade in 2021 for a year in which no new expansion was released. This is blamed on the combination of WoW and WoW Classic, which drives the numbers up.
  • Hearthstone has grown year-over-year, they say, because they keep bringing new content.
  • Diablo II Resurrected is Blizzard’s most successful remastered game, measured from its release in September to the end of 2021.

Behind the jubilation lie many problems

Where do you lose all those players?

Blizzard doesn’t reveal that, but it’s safe to assume that WoW is in a relatively weak state and players are quitting or at least pausing until the next expansion, 10.0.

Overwatch has fallen into a slumber, with precious little happening there for years while waiting for Overwatch 2.

Diablo 2 Resurrected had to deal with so many problems in online mode at the time of the relaunch that its success there certainly wasn’t fantastic either. In addition, the huge sexism scandal lay like a heavy shadow over the company for months.

After the last financial report in November 2021, the stock fell by several percentage points because they postponed the potential hits Diablo IV and Overwatch 2. Meanwhile, the situation at Activision Blizzard is completely different. Activision Blizzard explains why they had to sell themselves instead of buying EA.
