With great strides we approach Overwatch 2 – not the release, but the first closed beta and the accompanying flood of information about the hero shooter sequel. In a Developer update last month, the team announced it was bringing forward the PvP elements of Overwatch 2 to allow players to enjoy the new content sooner, while work continues behind the scenes on the story mode.
One highlight consists of the 33rd playable character in the Overwatch universe, the new heroine Sojourn. Even though we were introduced to the heroine at the announcement of Overwatch 2 and she even made a brief appearance in the first part, Blizzard Entertainment is now finally ready to introduce us to the character in more detail. For starters, they show the Background story of Sojourn in a video specialized for it.
Next is a Gameplay presentation is up next, highlighting the abilities of the damage heroine. The linchpin of the character is the Railgun, a previously unused weapon type in the game. With the primary fire mode you build up energy, which can then be fired with the secondary fire mode in the form of a powerful beam. When its ultimate ability is active, the energy recharges faster and you can fire beam after beam.
Sojourn’s cybernetic arsenal of abilities has even more up its sleeve. With the Powerslide you’ll slide forward at a fast pace and you’ll even be able to transform the forward movement into a high jump. During this movement you can continue shooting, which gives the heroine great flexibility. Your other ability is the Disruption Shot, which slows down enemies in the area of effect. This allows you to sabotage enemy maneuvers and make sure your powerful shots are on target.
If you want to learn more about the creation of the heroine and the development background, we recommend the latest Developer Update videoin which Miranda Moyer (Narrative Designer) and Geoff Goodman (Lead Hero Designer) reveal more. We have embedded it for you below. A German-language article, which refers to the Design Philosophy behind Sojourn, you can also read about it at the official website to get to know.
By the way: since some Overwatch-interested people from our community wondered whether the Overwatch 2 beta will also be offered for consoles – including the Nintendo Switch – we want to point out that Blizzard Entertainment has meanwhile clarified that it wants to include console players in future beta phases. The closed beta, which is scheduled to start at the end of April, will only be offered to PC players for the time being.
