Blizzard’s MOBA Heroes of the Storm didn’t quite manage to make the waves that League of Legends or even DOTA 2 did, but the title did have a dedicated player base that kept the MOBA alive. Unfortunately, that may not have been enough for Blizzard, which is why the company pulled part of the development team from the project in 2018 and discontinued the Heroes Global Championship e-sports event.
Heroes of the Storm won’t get any more content updates
Development on Heroes of the Storm still continued, but at a much slower pace. A few heroes continued to be released, such as Mei from Overwatch, and a few events also took place in the game. However, this is now coming to an end, because as Blizzard writes in a new blog post about Heroes of the Storm, there will be no more content updates in the future. Instead, the company is now treating its MOBA like StarCraft 2, for example, and will only release balance updates and bug fixes. New heroes, items for the store, and the like will no longer be developed.
The store in its current form will also continue, so players can still buy new heroes and the cosmetic items released so far. Incidentally, real-money lootboxes were removed from the game in 2019. These can now only be purchased via the in-game currency.

It’s quite a shame to see that such a beloved game like Heroes of the Storm is being (buy now 9,90 € ) has now been discontinued. While there are some MOBAS on the market, very few can really compete with League of Legends, and even fewer bring such innovative gameplay elements as Heroes of the Storm. The game will continue to exist, but will probably now simply fade into oblivion.
Heroes of the Storm: Mei – the new hero in the spotlight
As “token of their esteem” the company will give all players the rare mount Epic Arcane Chaos Lizard with the next patch. Finally, Blizzard writes: “Thank you to our Heroes community. You continue to be one of our most passionate communities and we thank you for your continued dedication and support. See you at the Nexus!”.
