An early version of Overwatch 2 will be used by Blizzard at the upcoming Overwatch League in April 2022. This was confirmed by an official spokesperson for the studio. Something like a launch date it also really slowly needed, I think.
The Overwatch clock is ticking, Blizzard!
Overwatch 2 is taking a long time to release, almost too long. It’s been over two years since the title was announced, and by the time it’s released, it will be at least more than three. If the title was still relevant for e-sports, I could understand Blizzard taking a little more time, but unfortunately the last grains are trickling down the Overwatch hourglass.
In an earlier post, I already showed in detail the slow dying of Overwatch based on falling Twitch numbers. Unless a special event is taking place, Blizzard’s shooter is about as interesting as Rainbow Six Siege. It’s still there, but it’s just a wallflower in the big schoolyard, drowning alongside the popular CS:GO and the hip Valorant.
Without a free-to-play model, can Overwatch manage to regain its old place in the e-sports sky?
As I wrote there before, currently these are simply the better alternatives for all Overwatch players who are tired of nibbling on the remains of a game left by the developer. Unlike Overwatch, the ‘cool schoolyard shooters’ receive regular updates and maintenance.
For the presentation of Overwatch 2, the timing is on point
As DotEsports’ Liz Richardson reports, next year’s – Season “will begin on an early version of Overwatch 2.” With this move, Blizzard is breathing some life back into the colorful shooter. Fans can finally start thinking about a return, because now they already have a first date in sight.
I can confirm, via an Overwatch League spokesperson, that the 2022 – Season will “begin on an early build of Overwatch 2.” Wow.
That’s when pro players will have to change, because Overwatch 2 will only have 5v5 matches with only one tank and an adaptive skill system.
A smart move, by the way, that all the players’ role models are shown here unpacking cool plays in the sequel (or replacement) of Overwatch. It makes the little players want to try it out right away.
After this generous glimpse into Overwatch 2, the release may not take too long then. If we wait until the end of the – Season , fans will have to wait two months longer and maybe more. On the other hand, the game has to be out for delivery already – but hey, at least the pros have already played it by then, so the “early version” can’t be that bad, right?
And surely it’s also in Blizzard’s interest not to upset Overwatch’s dwindling player base too much with long waiting times. After all, they shouldn’t get the feeling that Overwatch 2 will suffer the same fate as its predecessor.
Something else good also came out of the news about OWL in April 2022 – it’s positive news for a change after all the accusations and complaints surrounding the work culture at Activision Blizzard. Okay, there was still the name change of McCree, but this news didn’t really excite many people either.
