For months, Blizzard has been running the big purge. All names or allusions to developers are successively removed from all games and sexual or sexist insinuations fly upright from WoW and Co. Even before the renaming of popular heroes in Overwatch, the developers do not stop and have already announced weeks ago to give the cowboy McCree a new name. The old name, Jesse McCree, was no longer acceptable in light of the reference to the developer of the same name and his role in the sexism scandal at Blizzard. And so the popular character will soon appear under the name Cole Cassidy.

Now, one might have thought that Blizzard would put a lot of emphasis on finding a name that is beyond reproach in the current situation. But that’s apparently not really the case. Because with a little bit of research in advance, they could have noticed that this name is already “taken”, so to speak. For under the stage name Cassidy Cole (instead of Cole Cassidy) hires out an American actress.

Oh, the irony!

That wouldn’t be bad per se, if it wasn’t a porn actress of all people (we won’t link to her works here). So in the course of dealing with the sexism scandal and removing sexualized content, you rename your hero after a porn actress. You can hardly make something like that up.

Makes you wonder what Blizzard is doing with it now. We’re pretty sure they weren’t that aware of it. Will they change the name again now, which is not yet on the live servers, or will they stick to it. Of course, you also have to keep in mind that there’s probably some negative connection that can be made to almost any name – if not necessarily to the very thing that the developers actually want to remove from their games.
