Blizzard gives caster the ice cold shoulder after 5 years – “Frustrating”

Strange things are happening at Blizzard once again. The ESport in has had a team of casters commentating on the games for years. But caster VikkiKitty, who has been working for Blizzard since 2017, is now saying, “She’s been ignored for the 2022 – Season for half a year and just doesn’t get to know what’s going on. She’s not an isolated case.

This is the situation:

  • The “Overwatch ” was planned by Blizzard as a huge e-sports venture. After the huge success of Overwatch in 2016, the league was supposed to establish itself as a big, professional e-sports title in 2017. After all, Blizzard has already launched huge e-sports titles with Starcraft and Warcraft.
  • The league started 2017 with a lot of verve. Seats in the league were sold to e-sports organizations in a “franchise model” for many millions of US dollars. The plan was to model Overwatch after major US leagues in basketball or football: Professional players would be given fixed contracts, would play in local halls, and would hire casters to commentate on the matches.
  • But for a few years now, Overwatch seems to have run out of steam: came Fortnite, then Valorant as strong competition. Moreover, Overwatch is hardly developed anymore since Overwatch 2 is in planning – Corona made “on-site e-sports” problematic anyway, the league lost viewers when it switched from Twitch to YouTube, and then Microsoft is about to buy it.

Longtime caster ignored by Blizzard for 6 months

Here’s what one caster is saying now: ESport commentator VikkiKItty says she has not received an offer for 2022.

What’s worse, she hasn’t received any info on how to proceed either. After the end of the last – Season (September 2021), there would be a “lack of communication”, so no one talks to her anymore, that’s what frustrates her the most about her situation.

In the comments, fans express shock at the situation. After all, VikkiKitty is the only woman in the casting scene. Blizzard would not look good in the wake of the sexism scandal if they gave her the cold shoulder.

Is this an isolated case? No, many other casters who have been working for the league for a long time say they have no information whatsoever about what will happen with the Overwatch League in 2022. People who have been following Overwatch as an e-sport since 2015 are just left out in the cold.

Blizzard hit 2020 austerity course at the Overwatch League

Was there a case like this before? Yes, before the 2020 – Season , the league’s “star casters” had complained that they were being offered bad deals. Apparently, the league was driving an austerity drive there. At that time, some of the most prominent casters parted ways with the league and publicly criticized Blizzard.

At the time, Blizzard was also shrinking its Overwatch League team.

A major caster who left before the 2020 – Season , MonteCristo.

What’s behind it: There can be several reasons why there are such problems with casters here:

  • For one thing, the sale of Blizzard could be behind the fact that things are in flux, production companies are changing, and the plan for the new league is not yet ready.
  • Maybe they continue the austerity course even further and save on the casters, want to raise matches completely different. Activision Blizzard has already cut a lot of staff in everything that is not directly the development of new games in general.
  • Overwatch is generally, since Overwatch 2 is in the making, in no good condition.

Humanly, though, it’s hard to keep people who have been working with Blizzard for so long in the dark. The situation seems to be coming to a head there at the moment.

Many livelihoods and a lot of money are attached to the Overwatch League

Why is it so difficult? The situation is so tricky because the Overwatch League has demanded a huge investment from the teams that play in it in order to participate. However, the league has apparently been in crisis for a few years now, and it’s not taking off the way Blizzard actually thought it would in 2017.

However, because there is such a high investment in the league and so many livelihoods are linked to it, it is a sensitive issue for Blizzard.
