Blizzard: ban wave for Alterac Valley leecher

After the recent wave of bans that flushed numerous honor farmers from Alterac Valley and all of Azeroth from WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Classic, officials have now spoken out.

We had reported about it: In the last few days, the pre-patch phase of WoW: Wrath of the Lich King Classic numerous players banned, who had extensively farmed honor in Alterac Valley with their freshly created Death Knights or other characters. The accusation: “PvP Non-Participation/Exploitation”, or also: They should not have participated properly in battleground and arena games. Would also not be the first time in the long WoW history that players park their characters on the big battlefield somewhere in the middle of nowhere, to then do something else half-afk/afk (partly by using bots or other tools).

Blizzard explains

In the Community Council section of the WoW forum, developer Pazorax has now joined in a discussion surrounding the recent ban wave. One criticism of those concerned is namely that Blizzard has never clearly defined what is understood as “PvP Non-Participation” and when one properly participates in a battle. Or put in another way: Why do you get banned just for defending a tower?

Here are the findings from the WoW developer’s extensive post:

  • The developers have recently discovered a bug in the analytics data that calls into question some of the suspensions made, and in those cases Blizzard will lift the suspension (if it hasn’t already happened).
  • However, there have also been ban penalties where the developers remain convinced of a lack of participation in the battle, and these actions remain in effect, although some will have the duration of the penalty reduced if it is a first offense.
  • Blizzard’s data analysts use a variety of metrics to conduct reviews of characters. AFK reports from other players, for example, are just one indicator. However, a ban penalty never occurs just because such reports appear. Other metrics must always prove the lack of participation.
  • When many players report a player as AFK in Alterac Valley, only one thing happens automatically: the reported character receives a debuff that prevents him from receiving honor until he participates in PvP combat again.
  • The developers regularly review the metrics they use to determine whether or not someone is participating. And with regards to WotLK Classic, there is currently just such a review. However, Pazorax doesn’t want to reveal in detail exactly what criteria go into the review. Individual players could use this information specifically to avoid being discovered when violating the user agreements.
