Bigi Meier becomes new coach at FCS

Sweat drips from the players’ foreheads. Thirsty, the FCS pros reach for their water bottles after the final session. And in the middle of the crowd of players stands a new face, already decked out in an FCS shirt. “I’m helping out a bit,” says André “Bigi” Meier with a grin. Because what had long been thought of only as an emergency plan at the very back of the mind now had to be activated as a quick solution: FCS needs a coach who is in possession of the Uefa Pro license! This is the case with Meier – but not with Hakan Yakin. However, the contemplated solution, that the 45-year-old is accepted in a license course in Turkey, in order to get the permission to work as a coach, is not off the table. “I hope that the necessary documents will reach us in a week or two,” says the former international. Thus, Yakin reveals that the commitment of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) is available, and the Swiss Football Association (SFV) has also agreed to the change. “But now something is still missing from .” Meanwhile, Roland Klein has identified another “culprit.” The necessary definitive approval of the TFF is still waiting, the FCS owner announced via media release. But regardless of whether Fifa, TFF or SFV are to blame for this dilemma. Yakin will no longer be allowed to act as head coach for today’s game at Stade Lausanne-Ouchy, because his 20-day special permit from the SFV to act as head coach ad interim has also expired.

“‘Bigi’ Meier will be on the sidelines as head coach,” FCS now announces. And this is not as a short intermezzo, but Meier is to stay on board longer. As soon as Yakin receives the approval notice for the licensing course in Turkey, he will again act as head coach – with the support of Meier: “Afterwards, the experienced trainer will support the young coaching team as an advisor and deputize for Yakin in case of absences for the course,” FCS explains.

Match at Stade Lausanne-Ouchy

So a new coach is in place. But Yakin, of course, continues to act as the point of contact for the players. So they analyzed the 0:1 defeat against FC Wil in detail during the week. The most pressing problem: “We were far too harmless on the offensive,” says the coach. For example, the running routes of the offensive forces are not yet right, and the midfield has too little traction and precision in its actions. These problems become even more apparent when playing against more robust opponents. “We have a hard time against teams that tend to stand in the back and lurk on the counterattack,” says Yakin. The goal conceded against Wil, for example, was the result of his own throw-in; when this was lost, the switching phase took too long, and Wil striker Josias Lukembila was successfully launched with a simple pass into the deep. The veteran says: “At the moment, not all the cogs are meshing together. For example, the gaps between the defense and offense are often too large, and a certain insecurity means that actions are often too static. “We need to get back into offensive pressing to put the opponent under more pressure,” says the 30-year-old, calling for more courage and passion.

But one thing is clear: Stade Lausanne-Ouchy will once again be a very unpleasant opponent, FCS has often cut its teeth against the French Swiss. So Yakin is hoping that some players will come out of their little slump in form. One of them is striker Patrick Luan, who still has physical problems and has not yet been able to make an impact in the one-two with Raul Bobadilla. On a positive note, however, the 23-year-old is working well in training, says Yakin. For the former international, however, one thing is clear: “Our defense is solid, now the offense has to follow suit. Because of course we’re going to Lausanne to get three points there.” The game kicks off at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
