Especially in the 80s and 90s, they didn’t have a good reputation: adaptations of successful movies or movie series. Especially on popular consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System, Mega Drive and Super Nintendo, there were numerous terrible games that were meant to serve as an accessory to hit movies.
However, developers are now putting more love into the implementation of current pop culture, and as a result we get to enjoy games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Jurassic World build-up games.
But there are considerably more games that managed to capture the spirit of their template even before that and provide us with a solid (sometimes excellent) gaming experience. We would like to introduce you to a few of these titles.
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
The game prequel to the sci-fi movie Pitch Black starring Vin Diesel. The main character of this stealth action game was also modeled after the actor. The title was released for PC and the first Xbox at the time. Especially for Microsoft’s console, The Chronicles of Riddick was once a real must-have. In the role of Richard Riddick, you try to escape from Butcher Bay, the prison that gives the game its name. Something that made the title stand out strongly from the competition at the time was its minimalist user interface. A concept that was later picked up in games like Dead Space as well.
The game received a lot of praise from critics at its release. Most also remembered the videogame more positively than its movie counterpart.
Ghostbusters: The Video Game
Both the first two Ghostbusters movies and the cartoon series associated with them are true classics. While we’ve since gotten two new movies from this universe, neither is a true successor to parts one and two. This is the role that Ghostbusters: The Video Game takes on. Here Dan Aykroyd collaborated on the script and confirmed that this is basically the plot of the third film, had it ever been released.
As a new member of the Ghostbusters, you join the familiar staff of Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, Egon Spengler and Windston Zeddermore. In English, these characters are also spoken by their respective actors. So the stage is set for the game to optimally serve Ghostbuster fans. This is undoubtedly the case. But even without a nostalgic interest in the Ghostbusters, this third-person shooter is worth your time. Especially since a remaster of the title exists in the meantime.
Probably the best movie game on the Nintendo 64 and a milestone in console shooters. GoldenEye managed to do something that many had thought impossible at the time: Not only did developer Rare accomplish a solid single-player FPS with the title, they also brought the multiplayer shooter phenomenon to the home console. The genre was already incredibly popular on the PC through games like Doom and Quake 2. Hardly anyone could have imagined that it would be even remotely possible to duplicate this fascination with split screen and gamepads.
By now, shooters are one of the biggest e-sports genres. What really took off in 1999 with Quake 3 Arena, and reached its first peak with Counter-Strike, is now one of the cornerstones of electronic sports. Red Bull promotes young talent here, among other things with Red Bull Campus Clutch: A valorant tournament for students.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
This game is representative of a duo of action games based on the last two films in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Even though the spin-off to Return of the King was also a solid title, many gamers remember The Two Towers in particular. In both, you’ll experience the key moments of the fantasy epics from a gaming perspective. You’ll control companions like Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn and slash your way through hordes of orcs.
At the same time, another surprising Lord of the Rings title hit the market: In The Third Age, you accompany a party of heroes moving through Middle-earth at the same time as the companions. The highlight of the game is that it plays like a turn-based Japanese role-playing game.
The movie world has not been kind to the Terminator. Many fans swear by the fact that only two movies have been released within the franchise. And not every video game was a smash hit either. One remembers, for example, the terrible adaptations for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Only the lightgun shooter from the arcade was once able to thrill gamers.
The latest video game title from the Terminator universe, however, is a real insider’s tip. While Terminator: Resistance doesn’t reinvent the genre wheel, it’s a rock-solid entry in the list of sci-fi shooters. Fans of the action movie series in particular will get their money’s worth.
The Gamecube was once able to show what it was made of with this launch title. Star War: Rogue Leader is the successor to Rogue Squadron. Compared to its predecessor, however, this one is console-exclusive and not released on the PC. Even though the game can definitely keep up visually today – but for its time, the graphics were an absolute highlight, especially on a home console.
Rogue Leader also offers a lot of content. Numerous missions, which you can even play with different spaceships and fighters from the Star Wars universe. There is a healthy mix of dogfights in space and confrontations on the surface of different planets.
So if you want to feel like Luke Skywalker yourself for once, flying his trench run on the Death Star, you can’t go wrong with this title. Alternatively, you can also play like Dario Costa fly a plane through a tunnel to evoke the same feeling. And even though the bombardment of enemy laser cannons is missing here, we rather advise playing the video game.

Stunt pilot Dario Costa from Italy sets a new world record in Istanbul by flying through a tunnel at 245 kilometers per hour.
Indiana Jones and the Legend of the Imperial Crypt
At a time when Tomb Raider was still riding a real pop culture high, LucasArts decided they wanted a piece of that pie too and sent Indiana Jones into the fray. Basically understandable. After all, Lara Croft’s adventures are based on Indie’s archaeology escapades. Accordingly, Indiana Jones and the Legend of the Imperial Tomb comes full circle: because the title emulates the way Ms. Croft plays the games.
Currently Bethesda is working on a new Indiana Jones game. Whether or not this title will once again draw from previous adventure games like the Tomb Raider reboots or Uncharted is currently unknown. But we can assume that Indie will certainly resort to a climbing mechanic that is reminiscent of Nathan Drake in some way.
