Ban of Asmongold from WoW shows

Asmongold is one of the most successful streamers on Twitch ever, leading the way in MMOPRG and WoW in particular. Yesterday he was banned from World of Warcraft for 30 days, but just a few hours later he was able to log back into the MMORPG. had lifted his ban. The discussion about the ban shows how much “normal players” are bothered by this special treatment.

How big is Asmongold on Twitch?

  • It’s a strange situation, because Asmongold is “actually” one of the biggest streamers on Twitch ever, with 54,000 average viewers (2021), and has consistently been the biggest streamer on the platform ever in months when new MMORPGs were released.
  • However, he is currently not streaming on his main channel “Asmongold” with 3.3 million followers – but on a side channel “Zackrawrr”, with which he only reaches about 10,500 viewers on average.
  • Asmongold has increasingly retreated to his side channel because the hustle and bustle of his main channel became too much for him and he felt overwhelmed when his personal life was shaken by crises.

Twitch streamer Asmongold is permanently present via YouTube

So why does he seem so present? Asmongold’s real reach comes via the YouTube platform: “Editors” cut out parts of his Twitch clips and publish easily consumable morsels as “video on demand” on YouTube. Previously, people did this without his consent; since 2019, Asmongold has been earning money from these videos.

“Asmongold reacts to” videos in particular are popular: Asmongold watches editorial videos from others and comments on them. This is a way for big YouTubers to make maximum profit with minimal effort.

Even fans of Asmongold sometimes find it too much Asmongold on YouTube (via reddit):

Asmongold is extremely present on YouTube: here 6 videos of him are suggested to a user.

Through YouTube, Asmongold is omnipresent: videos appear daily on his own channels, where he reacts and comments on current issues. In addition, there are fan channels that also successfully create videos about him, cutting out Twitch clips.

If you are interested in MMORPGs in general, the YouTube algorithm quickly creates the impression that Asmongold is omnipresent. Because he has a polarizing nature and appearance, people often talk about him in very emotional terms: People either like him or loathe him.

Blizzard bans the biggest Twitch streamer on WoW for real-money trading: “I didn’t do anything wrong!”

Players believe: if they were in the place of Asmongold, they would have remained banned for 30 days

This is what the ban showed now: Blizzard banned Asmongold on Aug. 16 for “real money trading” for 30 days. He immediately protested his innocence.

Only a few hours later the ban was lifted again: Asmongold had his account back.

Comments on YouTube and sites criticize this special treatment of Asmongold. Players believe: if they had been banned, they would have had to serve the 30 days. But someone like Asmongold would only have to shout loudly and Blizzard would look at the case again and unban him.

YouTube states:

  • “Imagine being wrongfully banned and not having millions of viewers.”
  • “The problem is: unfortunately, that could happen to any player, and not all of us are great streamers, and so our chances of getting unbanned in a situation like that are just non-existent.”
  • “A streamer gets unbanned almost immediately. A normal player who plays WoW for 15 years and never bought gold or participated in any boosting is just screwed.”

On MyMMO, user MathError says:

I’m 100% sure, any normal player would never have been unbanned as fast as Asmongold with the “same wrong reason”: Here, someone at Blizzard read “Asmongold” – Better have another look at it, and “Tada – unbanned.” Any other player would probably have remained banned until September 30.

So you can see that many WoW players feel Blizzard has a double standard and treats streamers better.

The video shows Asmongold logging back into WoW. In the comments, users complain that they would never feel like him.

That’s what’s behind it: Anyone who has ever been banned in a game knows the feeling of “powerlessness”, because often they only receive form letters as a response, without detailed reasons.

A “ban” is a nightmare for any MMORPG player, because it means losing the result of months or even years of invested time. For some hardcore player it is a feeling as if he lost his home.

The fact that a Twitch streamer like Asmongold, who is already controversial, can get out of this situation within hours seems unfair.

The problem of companies banning first and looking closely at it later is also known from Twitch. Twitch also often takes back bans from large streamers if only enough people are outraged by the ban:

Twitch’s ban policy is getting more and more ridiculous
