The Viet Cong (Vietnamese: Việt Cộng) or National Front of the Liberation of South Vietnam is a paramilitary faction from . American soldiers refer to the Viet Cong as Victor Charlie or VC. The Viet Cong are a guerrilla faction that sympathizes with the communists and therefore should not be confused with the NVA, the regular army in Vietnam.

The Viet Cong show in combat that they have much less experience than their comrades from the army. This is expressed by their fighting style, often they just shoot blindly from behind cover, like the Brazilian militia back then. In missions like Payday, they are still dangerous, because there is naturally a numerical superiority. Their attack style leans heavily on the Imperial Japanese Army’s banzai attack, because the Viet Cong sometimes also run straight at the player and attack him in close combat. Sometimes they even carry a machete. They are the second antagonists in the Call of Duty: Black Ops campaign. There it also turns out that they have a strong connection with the ultra-nationalists and sometimes work together with the Spetznas.

Call of Duty: Black Ops

In Black Ops, the Viet Cong appear in three missions: Payday, Crash Site and Victor Charlie. They don’t wear military uniforms because they fight on their own. Only a piece of red cloth is tied to their arm so that they can distinguish themselves from the others (e.g. civilians). They often wear helmets with green leaves as camouflage, headscarves, work clothes, or nothing at all, which of course makes them vulnerable to chest shots. Many wear mere sandals, exposing their feet and toes to the dirty ground and bullets. By this description, it is easy to see that they love risk. Since they usually don’t wear armor and helmets, it should go without saying that they can be easily taken out, but they are no worse than the other standard enemies. Quite rarely, they also wear a homemade camouflage suit.

In Victor Charlie, the Americans search the tunnels used by the Viet Cong, with Alex Mason and Swift playing the tunnel rats. Along the way, the Viet Cong try everything to stop the Americans in the tunnel. In Payday, the Viet Cong force some American prisoners to play Russian roulette while a bookie takes bets.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II

They make a really tiny appearance in the campaign when Frank Woods remembers killing Viet Cong in a flashback.

The Viet Cong appear to have a wider range of firepower than their northern counterparts because of close ties to Kravchenko and Dragovich, who appear to supply the faction with Russian weapons.

Info

  • Sometimes there are Viet Cong character models that are created only for one-time occasions, for example the sleeping guards in Victor Charlie, whose model is never used in normal combat. Another Viet Cong model is in the Payday mission during Russian Roulette. He is bald and doesn’t carry a belt, also he looks somehow thinner than the other Viet Cong.
  • The models for Raider and Ghost of the NVA in multiplayer are very reminiscent of some of the Viet Cong characters from the campaign.
  • They are not a playable faction in multiplayer.
  • Often people think that the Viet Cong serve as zombies on the map Shangri-La, since the appearance is quite similar among other things (for example, with the screamer zombie), but this is wrong, because the map is set in the Himalayas. Nevertheless, you can find many boxes with something written in Vietnamese and Chinese.

Call of Duty

The Call of Duty series has existed since 2003 and in addition to various spin-offs, including for the handheld systems Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, 14 major titles of the series have now been released. Ever since the part of the series, great emphasis has been placed on the online multiplayer mode in addition to the single-player campaign, which is also reflected in the development of the shooter series. Since the first Call of Duty, World at     War, which was developed exclusively by Treyarch, each part also included cooperative challenges that you could play together with friends. The latest installment, Call of Duty: World War II, also features an extended multiplayer mode that puts you and your friends in the combat zones and famous battles of World War II. Using the divisions, you’ll be able to choose between the deadly sniper and the brute armored division and support your comrades in battle. In addition, World War II also has a zombie mode “Nazi Zombies”, as in its predecessor Call of Duty: Black Ops. Face the monsters of the Third Reich and win glory and honor.
