OpFor (short for Opposing Forces or Opposition Force) is a paramilitary organization established in 2011 after a coup d’état, obtained power in a country in the Middle East. They serve as antagonists in the first section of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare campaign, while you play with the USMC.
History
The OpFor, led by Khaled Al-Asad, came to power thanks to a brutal ambush in the capital to seize the wealth and comfort there. The ambush consisted of the dramatic execution of President Yasir Al-Fulani on national television.
After coming to power, America launched an invasion in the country to overthrow them again. Although the search for Al-Asad was unsuccessful, the USMC enjoyed some successes during their time in the country. In just a few days, the defensive bar of Al-Asad’s forces was pushed back into the capital, where they prepared for the final battle. However, the American troops were trapped in the capital and the OpFor detonated a nuclear bomb that wiped out both them and all the Americans instantly.
It later became known that the OpFor had a connection to the Russian ultranationalists in order to divert attention from the Second Russian Civil War. The Russians provided the OpFor with equipment, weapons, vehicles, and ultimately nuclear explosives.
After Khaled Al-Asad was tracked down and executed in Azerbaijan, it is not known what became of the OpFor.
A faction called OpFor also appears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in the Team Player and Final Phase missions in Afghanistan. It is possible that it is the same OpFor that was led by Al-Asad, but this is not 100% certain. If they are, it is not known if they have a new leader or motives.
Equipment
The OpFor was largely supplied by the Russian ultranationalists. Most of their weapons are also used by military forces in the Middle East. Although many weapons are well known, they are not in the OpFor’s arsenal.
The OpFor in Afghanistan is much better armed, for example they have access to the modern AK-47 with many newfangled attachments. Their clothing is also better, they wear modern army vests with ballistics instead of blue safety vests.
The OpFor has a large fleet of armored and armed vehicles, but also air support such as attack helicopters. During the coup d’état mission, you can even see fighter jets.

Nationality
The origin of the OpFor is never really explained anywhere. The two crossed swords on the flag are similar to that of the Omani, of Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan in the Taliban era between 1996 and 2001. The maps in the game don’t give any clue either, because the maps are set in various countries in the Middle East. According to Al-Asad in coup d’état, the country was a monarchy before Al-Fulani was elected president. While Charlie Doesn’t Surf and War Pig are set on the central coast of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the next mission, Demoralization, is set in Iraq. The street signs seen during these missions are from Syria. This suggests that the OpFor is fictional and made up to add spice to the story. A news station in the Blackout mission says that the country is small but became rich through oil. In some missions that were dropped from the single player, the country is specifically called “Saudi Arabia”.
The new OpFor in Modern Warfare 2 is fighting in Afghanistan. Whether they have a connection to the organization of the time is unknown, but they do speak Arabic. In the Team Player mission, you can also find posters with the face of Khaled Al-Asad.
Info
- The OpFor is the only faction that speaks foreign, but still yells “Semtex!” when one comes flying.
- In Modern Warfare Khaled Al-Asad is the announcer in multiplayer, in Modern Warfare 2 it is an unknown voice.
- They are the only enemy faction in Modern Warfare 2 that don’t appear in any special forces missions.
- In Modern Warfare, you always wear gloves as an OpFor soldier in multiplayer in the first-person view, even if you don’t wear them in the third-person view.
- The multiplayer model for the OpFor in Modern Warfare looks like Al-Asad, only without sunglasses.
Call of Duty
The Call of Duty series has existed since 2003 and in addition to various spin-offs, including for the handheld systems Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, 14 major titles of the series have now been released. Ever since the first part of the series, great emphasis has been placed on the online multiplayer mode in addition to the single-player campaign, which is also reflected in the development of the shooter series. Since the first Call of Duty, World at War, which was developed exclusively by Treyarch, each part also included cooperative challenges that you could play together with friends. The latest installment, Call of Duty: World War II, also features an extended multiplayer mode that puts you and your friends in the combat zones and famous battles of World War II. Using the divisions, you’ll be able to choose between the deadly sniper and the brute armored division and support your comrades in battle. In addition, World War II also has a zombie mode “Nazi Zombies”, as in its predecessor Call of Duty: Black Ops. Face the monsters of the Third Reich and win glory and honor.
