Apex Legends – Lore and Legends

Legends – Season 8 kicks off and brings a lot of new content. But before you jump back into the game, you should take a look at what’s in store for you next.

We sat down with the development team to talk about the new “Mayhem” theme and the future of the game. As with all Apex Legends – Season 8 exclusive interviews, we did this one via Zoom. Thanks again to the Respawn team for a great interview. Let’s not say any more words, here we go!

Fuse likes blowing stuff up, but what else is he good at? What are his dreams?

“Well, he’s good at guitar, he’s good at singing. He’s good at bonecage and he was a good mercenary, but that wasn’t really his passion. Until he turned 50 he had never really found his passion, and then he joined Bonecage and became the oldest champion ever. You’ll learn more about him in – Season 8.”
This slap from the trailer… can we expect some voice lines between Bloodhound and Fuse?

“I don’t think we’ve done any direct references. In writing, we tend to work much further in advance than anyone else. By the time that scene went into the trailer, we had all the lines recorded and written. Now localization takes a lot of time. But there will definitely be some friendships between the three (Bloodhound, Fuse and Caustic). You’ll see some story with them in – Season 8.”

Fuse had a pretty explosive performance. Should we perhaps expect any long-term consequences after that?

“You can certainly expect some blowback from the explosion. We don’t want to give too much away, though.”
Australia is known for having a lot of animals that want to kill you. Is Fuse’s Australian accent a sign that more animals are coming to Apex Legends?

“I think we want to do that, but I don’t think it has anything to do with Fuse. But anything is possible, isn’t it? The danger that comes from these animals will come in – Season 8!”

The Broken Ghost questline in – Season 5 was great. Will we see a continuation of that in – Season 8 or in the future?

“The most important thing we want for Apex is to keep it fresh, to keep it changing every – Season . That means we try new things every single – Season . Maybe the quests will come back, maybe they won’t. But we’re trying to move everything forward in Apex. We’re always trying to grow.

That was one way we tell a story. We try to tell stories in a lot of different ways, and we’re always trying new ways to do that. You can definitely expect new ways from – Season to – Season . But we try a lot of things, iterate, throw a lot of things out and bring them back later, and we’re not afraid to stick with what we have. More stories will definitely be coming.

The story from – Season 5 is still continuing, nothing has really been discarded. We just changed the way it was told. We’ve had comics, radio plays, we’re always finding new ways, but the story continues.”

We saw Blisk in the 2019 opening trailer and Ash during Broken Ghost. Many players are fans of the Titanfall series. Will some of the characters from it make it into Apex, perhaps even as playable characters?

“Apex Legends takes place in the world of Titanfall, so it’s all one world. There are references across different connections. We’ll never forget the lore we created for Titanfall.

Everything is possible because it’s all one universe. The fans love Titanfall and that universe and so do we. So we’re always looking at certain things and drawing from that. You see that not only in the characters, but also in the story, in the , in features that we’re bringing back that are based on the same technologies that you saw in Titanfall or that have some sort of connection to Hammond or that universe. That’s definitely not out of the question.

When it comes to characters, we always start with the basics and ask ourselves, “What’s our scope for design? What do we want to work on?” And then if that aligns with someone like Blisk or Ash, then of course that would be something we would have fun working on. It’s not a ‘yes’ or a ‘no,’ but it’s definitely possible.”

When you create a new character, what’s the first thing you think about: how will that character fit into Apex Legends with its mechanics and gameplay, or its lore?

“Usually we start by finding a good design. We look at the game and ask ourselves, “What design lends itself to us exploring it and it might mess up the meta with the current roster?” The three most important criteria of a good character are good core gameplay as a foundation; the character has to fulfill a strong fantasy so that fans can get lost in who this character is in the first place; and then personality that anchors the whole thing and makes it feel real and you can relate to it. You feel like you see yourself in that character. We always work on all three points and sometimes one of them triggers the others and gets the rest rolling. In general, though, we try to focus on the gameplay first.

Which point of that is more difficult varies from character to character.”

While we’re on the subject, which Legend has been the most difficult to design (so far)? It’s not Forge, is it?

“Forge was the easiest because… you know – dead. He was just a deathbox. I think they’re all very similar. It takes a lot of time and a lot of collaboration between different departments to bring a character to life. There’s always that one moment, that spark where they become who they are, and it’s different with every legend. Sometimes we’re inspired by our imagination, sometimes by gameplay, sometimes by personality. I think all the Legends are very similar and there’s not one that was harder than the others. It’s just a different journey that each character goes through until they become the final version of who they are in the end. And that’s one of the most fun experiences in gaming ever – developing characters.

The next character is always the hardest, no matter what it is, because we’re trying to do something different than what we’ve already done.”

Wraith is still the most popular legend, even after two years. Did you expect that?

“Especially with Wraith – no. We had no intention or knowledge that that would happen. Of course, we always have assumptions about what might happen if we put something in the game. But we’ve learned over the last two years that it’s worth as much as toilet paper. Throw out the content and something will change once it goes live in the game! It’s amazing what players do with the characters and the features and mechanics we put in within the first day. We see things that we ourselves didn’t think of or expect. So we’re also constantly learning and reacting to what’s happening in the live environment.

Wraith is a fan favorite and has been at the forefront in many ways for a long time. With the launch of Horizon, that changed, and in some ways Horizon is now at the top. You’ll see that change a lot more in the future. Our approach to how we create characters and what we’re willing to do – we’re not afraid to change something that’s there. We always want to keep the game fresh and innovative, so there will be some changes with each new character.”
What about the Legend classes? Fuse is an offensive character. Therefore, can we expect another support character in one of the next – Season s?

“We will continue to develop characters for all the different classes. We always try to consider how a new character will affect the current meta. It’s safe to say that you’ll see a non-offensive character in the next few – Season s.”

You guys have gone through the roof on Steam; are you expecting a lot of new players with the new – Season ?

“We certainly hope so, that’s always our goal! – Season 8 marks our two-year anniversary and Mayhem is a bit more bombastic and celebratory. We hope more people will jump into Apex for the first time and join the party. There’s no better time to get started than now.”

All of the abilities in Apex are based on technology. Will there ever be such a thing as supernatural elements and powers?

“For the Titanfall series, we decided that the story of the world would be based on exaggerations of real technology rather than the supernatural. That’s sort of the foundation. Even if something looks supernatural, there’s always the rule that the technology should have some relation to the real world. Wraith’s portal, for example, is based on a theoretical understanding of what it could be. And with Mirage’s holograms…. Holograms exist nowadays, but of course not to the extent of Mirage. We always keep that rule. If we break it, we end up breaking a little bit of the basis for the lore.

That’s why when we explain a character’s type of ability, we make sure it’s technology-based rather than magic-based.”
Special thanks again to the entire Apex Legends development team, who were really wonderful to talk to about the game. But that’s not all the questions we asked.

What is actually… “Apex Legends?

Within 24 hours, “Apex Legends” became the most-watched game on Twitch – after one week, over 25 million people were already playing it. What is the battle royale shooter about?

What is “Apex Legends” about?

Scenario: In a distant future, bandits, adventurers, and outlaws settle their disputes in a sporting contest to the death. The setting is a fertile, industrially developed valley on the edge of the galaxy.

  • Genre: Battle Royale shooter
  • Game modes: survival battle between a maximum of 20 teams of three.

At its core, “Apex Legends” is a classic battle-royale shooter: up to 60 players land simultaneously in teams of three on the game map called “Kings Canyon” – a densely built-up, fertile valley with many accessible houses, bunkers and towers. Once on the ground, unarmed players must search their surroundings for equipment and ammunition. The goal of the game is to stay alive until the end.

To prevent players from hiding all over the map and waiting to automatically be the last one left, the game area shrinks every few minutes. The longer a round lasts, the smaller the area where survivors can move and hide.

Apex Legends refreshes this now classic game formula with some ideas that are unique to the genre: For example, before starting a round, players select one of eight heroes, each of which has two special abilities and facilitates certain play styles.

Bangalore, for example, is the classic soldier who can conceal her position with smoke grenades and in an artillery strike in an emergency. The heroine Lifeline, on the other hand, can summon a drone to heal teammates – or directly order the delivery of high-value weapons and equipment via aerial drone. This way, all players can find the right hero for their preferred course of action.

How can I play Apex Legends?

Platform: “Apex Legends” is available for PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.

Price: The battle royale shooter is a “Free to Play” title and can basically be played for free on all platforms.

In-game purchases: “Apex Legends” allows the purchase of cosmetic items and new heroes either by means of in-game currency, which can be earned for free in every round, or with real money. The real-money currency “Apex Coins” can be purchased in five different amounts: The smallest possible amount is 1000 Apex Points for around 9.99 euros, while the largest pack with 10,000 Apex Points content costs 99.99 euros.

The developer emphasizes that it is not possible to buy game advantages with the help of real money: You can only use it to customize the appearance of the heroes, it says, or purchase new heroes.

Age rating: “Apex Legends” does not have a youth rating (USK 18).

Which technical terms should you know?

Respawn Beacon: If a player is shot down, the team members who are still alive have the opportunity to bring the fallen comrade back into the game: Each eliminated player leaves behind a so-called Respawn Banner, which can be collected by the players of the own team and handed in at one of 28 Respawn Beacons, certain locations on the map. If this succeeds, the fallen player returns to the game.

Jumpmaster: At the beginning of the game, one of the maximum three players of a team always takes on the role of the jumpmaster. He decides when and where his team enters the game area.

Ping: Using the middle mouse button, players can alert their teammates to interesting locations in the game world or enemies. These pings are a valuable tool for communicating quickly and efficiently within the team.
