Gibraltar is the OG tank par excellence in Apex Legends. Even today, he is still one of the best representatives of his role. But who is he exactly, and what abilities does he have? What is the best way to use him?
Gibraltar is the big nice tank who is popular with everyone. He might not be the best choice in solo cue, which is why he’s not often picked there, but if you’re traveling with a few good teammates, Gibraltar can unleash his full potential. We’ll show you how to play it the right way!
Who is Gibraltar?
Gibraltar is the son of two SARAS (Search and Rescue Association of Solace) volunteers. He has followed in his parents’ footsteps by volunteering with the rescue organization. He helped civilians who got into trouble in the Outlands before joining the Apex Games as a participant.
Not much is known about his childhood, but we do know that as a teenager he once stole his father’s motorcycle with his then-boyfriend. They wanted to run away together, but came to a standstill in a muddy landslide. His parents had to come to his rescue, and his father lost an arm in the incident.
It is said that Gibraltar is not participating in the Apex Games to become rich and famous, but to protect his friends who are also participating in the tournament. He really is a good soul.
How good is Gibraltar?
Gibraltar is incredibly strong in a well-coordinated team, but he rarely shines in the solo cue. Here is a summary of Gibraltar’s in-game performance:
Rating
Comment
Difficulty
2/5 It is no mean feat to understand Gibraltar or even play it well. That is why it is one of the best Legends for beginners.
Suitability for Battle Royale
4/5 As mentioned earlier, he would probably get a 5/5 here provided you always get good teammates. However, if your team consists of players who like to go their own way, then Gibraltar is poor.
Suitability for Arenas 5/5 Gibraltar’s skills are so focused on combat that even without a good team, you’ll usually have a lot of success in your arena games.
So no matter if you prefer to play Arenas or Battle Royale, Gibraltar is a good choice in both modes.
What abilities does Gibraltar have?
- Tactical: Protective Dome
- Creates a shield bubble. Works exactly as you would imagine such a thing to work.
- Recharge time: 30 seconds
Effects:
The dome has a radius of 6 meters and lasts for 12 seconds.
The dome keeps out all fire from the outside and inside except for Mad Maggie.
In the bubble, Gibraltar can revive his allies 33% faster. Normally this takes 6 seconds, in the dome only 4.5 seconds.
Passive: Weapon Shield
Using the targeting device creates a shield with 50 life that protects your upper body – if you kneel, even your lower body. When it is destroyed, the recharge time is 9 seconds.
Ultimate: Defensive Bombardment
Calls for a targeted mortar strike on a marked position.
Recharge time: 4.5 minutes
Effects:
The mortar strike covers an area within a radius of 24 meters.
The defensive bombardment lasts for 6 seconds and each shell can cause 40 damage to enemies.
All players can see the area where the bombardment was requested (shown as a red area).
This Ultimate is probably one of the strongest in the game.
How should you play with Gibraltar?
Many legendaries have abilities that make them more mobile. If you’ve been playing a lot of these legends lately, you might have a habit of wanting to move as fast as possible to outplay your opponents. With Gibraltar, the motto is: there’s power in rest. Always remember your passive ability and have your weapon ready when you go into a fight. This way you can benefit from your shield. With a calm playstyle, you can also find better ways to use your protective dome.
Many of your enemy contacts with Gibraltar won’t be played out as flanking maneuvers or surprise attacks, and you certainly shouldn’t overrun them. Just meet them face to face. Your protective dome serves as a defensive option, you can always briefly peek out of your dome and land shots on your opponents and then disappear behind the shield again. If it is not available, then always stay close to cover. Gibraltar can’t retreat from battles as easily as other Legends.
Gibraltar’s role in the team
Gibraltar forms a strong foundation for your team, so you can call him an “anchor” that holds everything together. Of course, he’s not an anchor in the traditional sense, since there’s always movement in your Apex Match… or should be! That said, you should often play more passively with Gibraltar than you might be used to. While other Legends are out to make as much distance as possible and flank or push the opponent, with Gibraltar you should always take it easy and leisurely.
The best weapons and equipment for Gibraltar
In terms of weapons, you should always opt for something like an LMG that you can use for suppressive fire, for shorter distances an MP or shotgun is always a good choice.
Primary Rampage, Havoc, Devotion
Secondary Mastiff, Peacekeeper, R-99
What legends play best with Gibraltar?
These are the legends that Gibraltar plays best with:
In Duos: Valkyrie, Caustic.
In trios: Valkyrie, Lifeline, Caustic.
There is hardly a legend that can’t benefit from Gibraltar, but especially Valkyrie is a good teammate because she can move her team with her Ultimate, and Gibraltar can then defend the new position. Caustic, however, is the best choice for a combo with Gibraltar. This is because your shield is able to catch your opponents in Caustic’s gas. This combo is really great, but it will take you a bit to get the hang of it.
How to counter Gibraltar?
Here you have some general tips to counter Gibraltar:
Whenever Gibraltar uses its protective dome – grab grenades! Either throw them directly over the dome so that they hit enemies when the ability expires, or venture into the dome yourself and leave your enemies an explosive gift!
If Gibraltar can’t use his dome, then he’s incredibly vulnerable. So focus your fire on him then, before moving on to other legends.
Make a run for it as soon as you see Gibraltar use his Ultimate. This isn’t Bangalore’s Ultimate, because Gibraltar will really finish you off with it (as long as you’re not playing Wattson and have your Ultimate ready).
If you’re going with Mad Maggie – her drill can penetrate the protective dome.
Those are some basic tips on how you can effectively tackle Gibraltar. He’s not so easy to keep down, though, so – good luck!
How popular is Gibraltar?
In the low ranks, Gibraltar has a low pick rate. However, the higher you go, the better it gets:
ranks | Pick Rate |
All ranks | 3,2% (13.) |
Bronze | 2,7% |
Gold | 3,3% |
Master | 3,4% |
What is actually… “Apex Legends?
Within 24 hours, “Apex Legends” became the most-watched game on Twitch – after one week, over 25 million people were already playing it. What is the battle royale shooter about?
What is “Apex Legends” about?
Scenario: In a distant future, bandits, adventurers, and outlaws settle their disputes in a sporting contest to the death. The setting is a fertile, industrially developed valley on the edge of the galaxy.
- Genre: Battle Royale shooter
- Game modes: survival battle between a maximum of 20 teams of three.
At its core, “Apex Legends” is a classic battle-royale shooter: up to 60 players land simultaneously in teams of three on the game map called “Kings Canyon” – a densely built-up, fertile valley with many accessible houses, bunkers and towers. Once on the ground, unarmed players must search their surroundings for equipment and ammunition. The goal of the game is to stay alive until the end.
To prevent players from hiding all over the map and waiting to automatically be the last one left, the game area shrinks every few minutes. The longer a round lasts, the smaller the area where survivors can move and hide.
Apex Legends refreshes this now classic game formula with some ideas that are unique to the genre: For example, before starting a round, players select one of eight heroes, each of which has two special abilities and facilitates certain play styles.
Bangalore, for example, is the classic soldier who can conceal her position with smoke grenades and call in an artillery strike in an emergency. The heroine Lifeline, on the other hand, can summon a drone to heal teammates – or directly order the delivery of high-value weapons and equipment via aerial drone. This way, all players can find the right hero for their preferred course of action.
How can I play Apex Legends?
Platform: “Apex Legends” is available for PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.
Price: The battle royale shooter is a “Free to Play” title and can basically be played for free on all platforms.
In-game purchases: “Apex Legends” allows the purchase of cosmetic items and new heroes either by means of in-game currency, which can be earned for free in every round, or with real money. The real-money currency “Apex Coins” can be purchased in five different amounts: The smallest possible amount is 1000 Apex Points for around 9.99 euros, while the largest pack with 10,000 Apex Points content costs 99.99 euros.
The developer emphasizes that it is not possible to buy game advantages with the help of real money: You can only use it to customize the appearance of the heroes, it says, or purchase new heroes.
Age rating: “Apex Legends” does not have a youth rating (USK 18).
Which technical terms should you know?
Respawn Beacon: If a player is shot down, the team members who are still alive have the opportunity to bring the fallen comrade back into the game: Each eliminated player leaves behind a so-called Respawn Banner, which can be collected by the players of the own team and handed in at one of 28 Respawn Beacons, certain locations on the map. If this succeeds, the fallen player returns to the game.
Jumpmaster: At the beginning of the game, one of the maximum three players of a team always takes on the role of the jumpmaster. He decides when and where his team enters the game area.
Ping: Using the middle mouse button, players can alert their teammates to interesting locations in the game world or enemies. These pings are a valuable tool for communicating quickly and efficiently within the team.
