In the WoW community council area, the problem that addons can continue to execute follow commands “from a distance” has been discussed for several weeks. However, corresponding measures taken by the developers could have a negative impact on the accessibility of the game. Some time ago, Blizzard itself commented on this.
In the WoW community council area, the issue of addons continuing to be able to execute follow commands “from a distance” has been discussed for several weeks. Such a feature is very attractive for boosting services, for example, as the boosted person can easily do things away from the PC for a longer period of time while his character bags the experience points.
In practice, it looks like this: A booster makes the group full and distributes an auto-follow weakaura to his four “customers”, through which you can accept /follow commands by others. After that, the customers can “afk” the paid time while the booster keeps using the /follow command to lead the characters out of the old ID and into the new dungeon ID.
Anti-boosting vs. anti-accessibility
In the meantime WoW developer Pazorax has joined this discussion and explained:
In general, the team agrees that accessibility is important, but that doesn’t mean that every attempt to prevent automation or botting is an attack on accessibility.
There are many game functions for which the game requires a hardware event, and it makes sense to add the /follow command to this list to prevent exploitation as described above.
The new restriction is to be introduced with WotLK Classic and Dragonflight.
However, before that, the developers want to talk to players who rely on such /follow commands due to restrictions.
The change Blizzard wants to implement will still allow restricted players to follow a guide, including by using a macro or UI modification to issue the “follow” command. However, the behavior that the change will prevent is UI mods initiating a follow on their own after receiving a message from another source, such as a message from another player.
