Apex Legends is mostly known as a huge Battle Royale, but there are actually a lot of different game modes. Today we will explain all the modes in Apex Legends.
Apex Legends is a battle royale. Everyone knows that. You land on the map, try to take out the other teams, and whoever is the last one alive wins. But is that all Apex Legends has to offer? Not at all. – Season al events regularly introduce limited-time modes, and alongside these we also have permanent access to a number of PVP, training and ranked modes that are separate from the classic BR. But what are all these modes? And how do they work?

What modes are available in Apex Legends?
Training
Let’s start with the mode that everyone has to play before they can launch into another: training. There’s actually not much to say here. It’s a typical 15-minute tutorial that every Battle Royale game offers to explain you the basic mechanics. It doesn’t go into much detail here, but just tells you the most important basics. In Apex Legends we’ll have to do the usual tasks in the tutorial: learn how to move, use equipment, revive teammates and request support. All in all, it will take you about 15-20 minutes to complete the tutorial before you are allowed to try out the other modes.
Shooting range
In addition to the training mentioned above, you can also access the shooting range at any time. Here you can try out different weapons or do some target practice before the next match. It’s just a shooting range, nothing particularly exciting. It serves the purpose for which it is intended. And that’s more than can be said for some of Apex’s competitors, who (oddly enough) still don’t have a shooting range….
Battle Royale
Okay, now we come to the main mode of Apex Legends: Battle Royale. In Apex Legends, a Battle Royale match starts with 60 players and works as usual: while the playable area of the map gets smaller and smaller, you have to find and use loot to take each other out – the last team standing wins. The mode can be played in duos or trios, and you have a choice of the following maps (yes, there are actually multiple maps in Apex):
King’s Gorge
Edge of the World
Olympus
Storm Point
Arenas
The arenas are the turn-based PVP mode of Apex Legends. It is very well thought out and plays a bit like CS:GO, Valorant or Vanguard’s Champion Hill. Basically, there are no respawns in the arenas and you have to eliminate the opposing team to win a round. During the rounds you collect points, which you can then use to buy new weapons and equipment. So, like in CS:GO, you start with pistols in the “Eco Round”, collect points, buy an assault rifle or an MP and get stronger as the rounds go on. You have to win a total of 3 rounds to be victorious (but you always have to be at least two points ahead of your opponent to win). The whole thing is a 3v3 mode, available on the following maps:
Habitat
Encore
Overflow
Party Crasher
Phase Runner
Rotating map
Ranked Leagues
Ranked Leagues are effectively the Ranked mode for Battle Royale. The same rules apply as in Battle Royale, but each player has a rank that you improve or degrade after each match, depending on how well you played. The rank depends on how many RP or rank points you have. If you win a match, you get 125 RP, but if you are 14th or worse, you get no RP at all. And just participating in matches will also cost you RP. Therefore, only the best players can advance in ranks and further increase their RP.
The available ranks are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master and Apex Predator. However, if you want to make it to Apex Predator, you’ll need to play something like this:
Ranked Arenas
Ranked Arenas play the same as the normal Arena mode, but you also have a rank here, which moves up or down depending on your performance. The same ranks apply as in ranked leagues, but the ELO system is much simpler and less complicated. It’s very simple: you’ll go up in the overall ranking if your team wins, and you’ll go down if your team loses.
Will Apex Legends have a solo mode?
Apex Legends might actually be getting a dedicated solo Battle Royale mode, as there have been solos in the past as a limited-time mode. However, it hasn’t been officially confirmed if a permanent solo mode is coming. So while it’s possible that this mode will come permanently in the future, for now it looks like we’ll have to settle for occasional solos as part of events. As soon as we hear something about a permanent solo mode, we’ll update this article.
Is there PvE in Apex Legends?
No, Apex Legends does not have a dedicated PvE mode like a campaign or co-op horde mode. However, there are elements of PvE on the Stormpoint Battle Royale map. Here there are neutral AI enemies, Spiders, and Prowlers that attack any players that get too close. So Apex really only offers minimal PvE, like Fortnite does, for example. There are bots on the map, but no real matches against AI opponents.
What is actually… “Apex Legends?
Within 24 hours, “Apex Legends” became the most-watched game on Twitch – after one week, over 25 million people were already playing it. What is the battle royale shooter about?
What is “Apex Legends” about?
Scenario: In a distant future, bandits, adventurers, and outlaws settle their disputes in a sporting contest to the death. The setting is a fertile, industrially developed valley on the edge of the galaxy.
- Genre: Battle Royale shooter
- Game modes: survival battle between a maximum of 20 teams of three.
At its core, “Apex Legends” is a classic battle-royale shooter: up to 60 players land simultaneously in teams of three on the game map called “Kings Canyon” – a densely built-up, fertile valley with many accessible houses, bunkers and towers. Once on the ground, unarmed players must search their surroundings for equipment and ammunition. The goal of the game is to stay alive until the end.
To prevent players from hiding all over the map and waiting to automatically be the last one left, the game area shrinks every few minutes. The longer a round lasts, the smaller the area where survivors can move and hide.
Apex Legends refreshes this now classic game formula with some ideas that are unique to the genre: For example, before starting a round, players select one of eight heroes, each of which has two special abilities and facilitates certain play styles.
Bangalore, for example, is the classic soldier who can conceal her position with smoke grenades and call in an artillery strike in an emergency. The heroine Lifeline, on the other hand, can summon a drone to heal teammates – or directly order the delivery of high-value weapons and equipment via aerial drone. This way, all players can find the right hero for their preferred course of action.
How can I play Apex Legends?
Platform: “Apex Legends” is available for PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.
Price: The battle royale shooter is a “Free to Play” title and can basically be played for free on all platforms.
In-game purchases: “Apex Legends” allows the purchase of cosmetic items and new heroes either by means of in-game currency, which can be earned for free in every round, or with real money. The real-money currency “Apex Coins” can be purchased in five different amounts: The smallest possible amount is 1000 Apex Points for around 9.99 euros, while the largest pack with 10,000 Apex Points content costs 99.99 euros.
The developer emphasizes that it is not possible to buy game advantages with the help of real money: You can only use it to customize the appearance of the heroes, it says, or purchase new heroes.
Age rating: “Apex Legends” does not have a youth rating (USK 18).
Which technical terms should you know?
Respawn Beacon: If a player is shot down, the team members who are still alive have the opportunity to bring the fallen comrade back into the game: Each eliminated player leaves behind a so-called Respawn Banner, which can be collected by the players of the own team and handed in at one of 28 Respawn Beacons, certain locations on the map. If this succeeds, the fallen player returns to the game.
Jumpmaster: At the beginning of the game, one of the maximum three players of a team always takes on the role of the jumpmaster. He decides when and where his team enters the game area.
Ping: Using the middle mouse button, players can alert their teammates to interesting locations in the game world or enemies. These pings are a valuable tool for communicating quickly and efficiently within the team.
