Shooter fans will have a lot to look forward to in 2022: Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 have now been officially announced. There is still no extensive image and video material for the new part of the Battle Royale offshoot, but there is a lot of information – both official and unofficial. We reveal what we know about Warzone 2 so far.
This is what is officially known about Warzone 2
When should CoD Warzone 2 be released?
Release still 2022:
Rumors recently made the rounds that Warzone 2 might not be released until 2023. But that’s not the case, as the developers have confirmed in the official developer blog. There it says that Warzone 2 will still be released in 2022.
When exactly?
This is not yet clear. According to this Warzone 2 soon after
will be released soon after the release of Modern Warfare 2, which, as we know, is October 28, 2022. Christmas is likely to be the targeted timeframe. By the way, Activision has not (yet) abandoned the annual rhythm, even after the takeover by Microsoft. That would be a huge opportunity, according to CoD expert Phil:
Old content can not be transferred to Warzone 2
Bad news has now been confirmed by the developers: You won’t be able to transfer your Warzone content you’ve earned over the years to the sequel, so you’ll have to start from scratch. This concerns operators, blueprints and weapon skins. Thanks mainly to crossover events with Attack on Titan, Snoop Dogg or Godzilla vs. Kong, among others, many Warzone veterans have already earned a large selection of content, so you’ll be forced to say goodbye to it when you switch to the sequel. In Warzone 1, of course, all the content will still be there.
What new features will Warzone 2 offer?
New engine for Warzone 2 and MW2:
The developers have already confirmed that Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 are based on a new engine and thus have been developed from scratch.
Not an update, but a real successor:
Warzone 2 is supposed to be anything but an update in terms of scope and innovations. Here we are dealing with a standalone title that wants to make many design decisions of its predecessor different – and above all better:
New sandbox mode:
Not much is known about this yet. However, the developers have already promised that fans will receive more information about what’s behind it in the near future.
New progression system:
Few things are more important for long-term motivation in multiplayer shooters than a good, balanced and above all rewarding progression system. Warzone 2 wants to have some innovations up its sleeve on this front, but they haven’t been presented in more detail yet.
Return of well-known maps:
According to Henderson, fans of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 can once again look forward to a re-release of well-known levels. This should also have an impact on Warzone 2, where the maps will be implemented as POIs. The maps are Quarry, Terminal, Afgan and the classic Highrise. There was already a hidden teaser for Highrise in the latest trailer:
Two at once large
Maps in the works?
According to Tom Henderson (via Exputer) there are two big maps in development for Warzone. However, they will probably not be available right at launch. There are no concrete details about the maps at the moment, but according to Henderson they should be similar in principle to those of Warzone
Strongholds:
According to Henderson, these strongholds will be a new variable in Warzone 2’s gameplay. The strongholds are to be distributed in small and large variants across the game world and populated by enemy AI. Whoever captures the stronghold will be rewarded with access to their own loadout, among other things. Each stronghold can only be captured once per game.
Warzone 2 and DMZ:
Allegedly, Warzone 2 and the new game mode Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) share one and the same game world. What DMZ is supposed to be about is summarized in another article:
Warzone 2 to get lots of post-launch content
Apparently, there’s no need to worry that Warzone 2 will run out of steam in terms of content after just a few months. For the time after the launch one places regular and free content updates in prospect to deliver new maps, new modes, – Season al events, community celebrations and more.
What platforms will Warzone 2 be released on?
Warzone 2 will serve as wide a range of systems as possible, namely: PC (via Battle.net and also on Steam), Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. This announcement is causing displeasure among the gaming community. Instead of being happy about the large amount of target platforms, some fans fear that sticking to the old consoles could become a technical pitfall for Warzone 2. The tenor: You didn’t buy a new console for no reason, only to be held back by the old platforms. Sony console owners are not to be excluded, despite Activision’s takeover by Microsoft. Accordingly, we can certainly expect crossplay between the consoles and the PC again. Most likely, the anti-cheat Ricochet will be used again, which Warzone is already using successfully:
What happens to Warzone then?
Whether Warzone will run parallel to Warzone 2 for a while is currently unknown. Most likely, the servers will not be shut down directly, but will continue to run – after all, the multiplayer modes of old CoD games are still available. We suspect that Warzone will simply not get any new – Season s when Warzone 2 is released. As soon as we have any information about this, we’ll let you know immediately, of course. What do you think about Warzone 2? Would you be annoyed at losing your weapons and loadouts, or do you long for a reboot? Feel free to let us know in the comments!
