Age of Empires 4: Bee allegedly used map hacks

For several weeks, , Red Bull and a group of professional players in hacked the games of Pavel “Bee” closely examined Zhigarev and came to the conclusion that the Russian regularly used map hacks to increase his chances of .

As a consequence, “Bee” has been disqualified from Red Bull WoLoLo, a tournament with around 300,000 euros in prize money that will be held in Heidelberg in October 2022.

Detailed analyses of Bee’s games

Map hacks allow their user to learn more information about the opponent than would be possible in a normal game, depending on the exact way they are made. In a real-time game, this is an immense advantage.
When analyzing the defendant’s games, for example, it was repeatedly noticed that he already moved his field of view to certain areas shortly before enemy attacks in order to react to them at the perfect time. His visual range also regularly hovered above the actually invisible area of the enemy base for longer periods of time.

On the Four Lakes map, this behavior is particularly glaring: in every game in which his opponent attempted to secretly build a port on the lake, “Bee” immediately attacked the construction site with pinpoint accuracy using his powers, without having scouted out the location beforehand. In games in which his opponent forwent this move, he did not move out with his early powers.

In general, there has also been a discrepancy between his tournament games and his ranked games broadcast on Twitch: In the former, he could suddenly beat top players like Alexis “MarineLorD” Eusebio and Aleksandar “Beastyqt” Krstić, in the latter he was always clearly inferior to opponents of this caliber. After a month-long break from the game, the Russian returned a few weeks ago and suddenly beat players he never took a single card from before.

Steam’s anti-cheat systems also list “Bee” as a hacker in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), indicating his willingness to use unfair means in games. “Bee” denied the allegations in a YouTube interview.

Consequences

However, for the employees of Microsoft, Red Bull and Relic, this evidence was strong enough to deny “Bee” the place in Red Bull WoLoLo for which he had qualified. The beneficiary of the scandal is the Spaniard Pedro “LucifroN” Durán, who replaces “Bee” in Heidelberg.

“MarineLorD”, who wrote a long analysis of the case from his point of view, calls for better replay and observer tools for “Age of Empires 4” in the future to facilitate such investigations.
