After 10 years StarCraft II is over – Is part 3 coming?

There will be no more new content for II. But the developers have already hinted “in passing”: There is something new coming for StarCraft.

For many a strategy fan of Blizzard it might be the horror news. The development on one of the last big RTS games will be stopped. There will be no more big updates for StarCraft II. But is the game “dead” with that? What will the developers do now and will it still be possible to play StarCraft II?

What will happen to StarCraft II? In a big blog post, the developers of StarCraft II have announced that they will be scaling back development. There will be no more big updates with new content like commanders or battle chests.

However, the game will not be completely neglected. There will still be balance patches when they are necessary. The competitive eSports scene is important to the community and also the developers, which is why work will continue here when balance changes are necessary. So the game is still fully playable.

Starcraft 2 Legacy of the void

Legacy of the Void ended with a brilliant finale.

What are the developers working on now? From the quotes, it’s pretty clear that the developers are currently thinking about where the journey might go next. For example, they say:

(…) This change allows us to think about what we want to do next, not only in terms of StarCraft IIbut also to the entire universe of StarCraft.

Later added:

We are immensely grateful for your many years of support and we will keep you informed of any plans for future forays into the Koprulu sector.

With this, it seems clear that the developers are considering a new project and the StarCraft universe will continue to expand.

Is there a StarCraft III coming? A StarCraft III seems to be rather unlikely after first considerations. This is due to several reasons:

  • StarCraft II was overshadowed for many years by its predecessor, StarCraft: Brood War. Even though StarCraft II had already been released, many professional gamers still stuck with its predecessor, which is still considered one of the best strategy games of all time – it even got an extra remaster. Wanting to split the RTS community up for a third game now seems rather unlikely.
  • The story of StarCraft is practically over. The expansion “Legacy of the Void” ends with a brilliant finale that solves a huge cosmic threat. Many antagonists have been defeated. There is currently no longer an obvious enemy.

Of course, it would be possible for Blizzard to focus on smaller conflicts, or to make a prequel – or simply to continue the story with new problems.

StarCraft Ghost should have had Nova in the main role.

Some people also hope that the next trip to the StarCraft universe won’t be a strategy game, but a shooter or an MMO. Blizzard had tried this once before and wanted to bring a shooter around the Ghost agent Nova with “StarCraft: Ghost” a long time ago. However, the project was discontinued.

When will there be new info? We should not expect an announcement yet, at least in the next few weeks. In the best case, there will be new information in February 2021, because then the “BlizzConline” takes place – a substitute fair for the BlizzCon. It would be quite conceivable that the developers already tease a new project here. On the other hand, Blizzard is also known for long years of development. It could also be that we won’t hear anything more about StarCraft for the next one or two years.

Would you like a StarCraft III? Or would you rather see another genre, like a shooter or MMO, in the StarCraft universe?
