Who is looking forward to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in Cologne was looking forward to, must now be very strong: Activision Blizzard will forego the Gamescom 2022 appearance.
Update from 13 June 2022:
Due to many requests: The Gamescom cancellation concerns Activision Blizzard as a whole – i.e. including Blizzard Entertainment. Accordingly, neither Diablo 4 still Overwatch 2 (to be released on October 4) will be playable on the exhibition grounds.
Blizzard last took part in Gamescom in 2018 – back then with an almost epic appearance including a show stage, elaborate decorations and hundreds of game stations. This analysis sheds light on the reasons for Blizzard’s withdrawal in the run-up to Gamescom 2019. Within minutes of the exhibition halls opening, long lines had formed at the Sony PlayStation booth in Hall 7: Call of Duty Modern Warfare was one of the undisputed highlights of Gamescom 2019. A few weeks later – on October 25 – the shooter hit the market.
The timing is similar this year:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been announced for October 28, 2022 (to be released for PC, PlayStation and Xbox*) – last week, publisher Activision Blizzard showed the first gameplay from a mission as part of Summer Game Fest. But unlike three years ago, this time there will be no opportunity to play the new Call of Duty in person in Cologne: On GamesWirtschaft’s request, Activision Blizzard has confirmed that the publisher will forego Gamescom 2022 (August 24-28 in Cologne).
Boris Gojic, Territory Marketing Manager DACH/CEE:
“After careful consideration, we have decided that we unfortunately will not have a presence at gamescom this year. We remain committed to game and industry efforts in Germany, and will continue to explore participation at gamescom in years to come. We’re delighted that fans will be back in Cologne this August to experience great entertainment, and look forward to all the news and excitement coming from the show.” Gamescom tickets have been available in advance via the online store since last Thursday; for the first time, no tickets will be offered at the box office. There is no official exhibitor list yet. Upon request, Bandai Namco Entertainment, THQ Nordic and Koch Media, among others, have confirmed their participation; with Take-Two, Nintendo and Wargaming, three of the largest Gamescom 2019 exhibitors have cancelled at the same time.
