Because the shouters are coming, World of Warcraft has to rework an old boss. Nefarian in the Dragonflight Hoard learns again.
World of Warcraft is old now – quite old. With almost two decades under its belt, Azeroth has seen numerous instances, raids, and bosses that players have had to face. Some of them have been remembered forever and are even updated again and again to this day. With the addition of the Dracthyr as a new race in Dragonflight, one of the earliest raid bosses from “Vanilla” is being revisited.
Which boss are we talking about? It’s about Nefarian from the Black Wing Lair – the raid might only be remembered as “BWL” by many veterans. It was the second major raid of the classic World of Warcraft and led far up into Blackrock to battle the Black Dragons and ultimately even Nefarian, the son of Deathwing.
Nefarian was long considered one of the toughest bosses, as almost the entire raid required a special cloak and the fight extended over several phases – something that was rather unusual at the time.
Nefarian – one of the classic and at the same time the most famous dragon bosses ever.
Why is he being revised? That Nefarian is being revised is due to the introduction of the Dracthyr, or rather the new class “Caller”. Because Nefarian has a very special ability, the so-called “Class Calls”. The black dragon always calls out a single class and then inflicts a negative effect on it. Mages, for example, start transforming their allies into different animals using Polymorph, while Paladins strengthen the dragon boss with their blessings.
So the class calls are powerful “control effects” tailored to each class individually.
What does Nefarian do with Dracthyr? If Nefarian is in combat with a caller, then this class can also be mentioned individually. Nefarian then speaks (translated):
“Callers, no more than pitiful worldlings. No wonder my father abandoned your experiment.”
Callers are then inflicted with the “Pitiful Welpling” debuff for a few seconds. This reduces all damage done and all healing done by 99.9%.
Does it even matter? Actually, no. Because callers start at a high level anyway, where the Nefarian could kill with a single ability. So in the normal course of battle, a caller will never see this ability – so you have to go the extra mile to get hit by it.
Also, historically, it makes little sense for Nefarian to refer to the Callers, because after all, Nefarian was killed in the story long before the Callers were ever freed from their prison.
Still, it’s interesting that even after 17 years, Blizzard doesn’t forget to adjust old bosses and their abilities so that all classes can actually be affected by them.
What do you guys think of this? A cool, detailed bit of nostalgia? Or wasted time of the developers?
In WoW, old content often changes – for example, the most popular raid became the least popular dungeon.
