The League of Legends European Championship (LEC) may send four teams to the 2022 World Championship of the popular eSports discipline. The league’s finals finally clarified which teams the European league will send to represent the region at Worlds with the quarterfinals of the lower tournament bracket on Friday, September 2, 2022 – all four names have now been finalized.
LEC Summer 2022: Strong run from Fnatic
Three teams were already set for the LEC contingent at the World Cup: #G2 Esports, MAD Lions and Rogue, who formed the top trio in the group stage of the summer – Season , have already secured places in the league’s top quartet – and tickets to the Worlds – with this result.
Playing for the final open spot were Fnatic, who already won in the first round of the Lower Bracket with a hard-fought 3:2 against Excel Esports had prevailed, and Misfits Gaming. This narrow victory against the surprise team of the – Season seemed to give Fnatic tremendous confidence, as everything went like clockwork against Misfits: Fnatic swept aside its opponent 3-0, thus going down without a sound in its final LEC appearance – Misfits sold its place in the league to Team Heretics for 2023. Not the farewell they had hoped for there.
LoL Worlds 2022: Play-in-Seed for MAD Lions
For Fnatic, however, the journey went even further: in the semifinals of the lower section of the tournament, the team led by German botlaner Elias “Upset” Lipp also took MAD Lions head-on, knocking them out of the finals with a score of 3:1. The Lions will thus have to settle for a play-in seed for Worlds 2022, meaning they won’t start immediately in the group stage – unlike G2 Esports, which has already advanced to the finals of the final round.
Besides the title decision, there is thus one more important thing to be played out in these play-offs: Whoever wins the Lower Bracket Final between Fnatic and Rogue will be allowed to directly enter the Group Stage with G2 at Worlds 2022. The loser, on the other hand, will have to join MAD Lions in the preliminary round. This decision will be made on September 10 at 5 p.m., and the duel for the championship will take place on September 11 at 5 p.m.
