The League of Legends World Championship 2020 in Shanghai will take place with only 22 of the originally planned 24 participants. Riot confirmed that the two teams from Vietnam will not participate in the Worlds. The other participants have already been confirmed.
The reason for non-participation is the handling of the COVID-19 virus in Vietnam. The teams are theoretically allowed to go to China and participate in the tournament, but they are forbidden to return to their home country in Vietnam. The two spots will remain vacant and will not be filled by straggling teams.
Worlds Format
The change in the number of participants will affect the format of the play-in phase and therefore the distribution of seeds.
Accordingly, 10 teams will compete in the play-in phase. They will be divided into two seeded groups of five teams each and play a best-of-one against each opponent in their own group. The two group winners will qualify for the Main Event, the two group losers will be eliminated.
The third- and fourth-place teams in each group will play a best-of-five series, with the loser eliminated and the winner playing a best-of-five series against the second-place team in the other group. The winners of those games also qualify for the group stage.
“In order to keep an even number of teams in the play-in, we also had to automatically advance a team that was originally scheduled to start in the play-in to the group stage. After evaluating past regional performance in international events, we concluded that it would be fairest to advance the third seeded team from the LCK.” – Riot
As a result, the third-place LCK advances from the play-in stage directly to the group stage of the playoffs.
These participants have already been determined!
Unlike previous LoL Worlds, the top two regions will have four seeds based on recent world ranking results. This year, those seeds are the LPL and the LEC. The LCK and LCS will have three seeds as before.
