The game principle in Pokémon GO is basically relatively simple. Nevertheless, both new and experienced trainers make mistakes in the game again and again. We at MeinMMO will show you what these mistakes are and why you should avoid them.
What is it about? Anyone who plays Pokémon GO regularly knows that the game is mostly self-explanatory. Still, there are one or two mistakes that both new and experienced players make on a regular basis.
MyMMO author Franzi Korittke has been playing Pokémon GO herself on a daily basis for over two years. She has already participated in numerous events of the game and thus made contact with other players. In the process, she has noticed time and again that one thing or another was not thought of when playing.
And she herself has also made these mistakes. Therefore, below you can see the most common 8 and why it makes sense that you avoid them.
Mistake 1: Not clicking and catching all Pokémon
This is the error:
Probably the easiest thing to do in the game is click and catch Pokémon. But time and time again, monsters appear on the map that you’ve already caught in a big way or that don’t advance you in the game due to their poor stats. For this reason, many players stop clicking on them altogether.
Therefore, you should avoid the mistake:
It’s still worth clicking and catching every Pokémon. For each catch, you will receive precious stardust and XP, as well as the corresponding candies.
In addition, this monster might be hiding an iridescent specimen. This is a chance you should not miss. With a little luck, you’ll find a Shiny that’s missing from your collection.
Error 2: Give away swap actions
Each player has a daily swap limit of 100 swap actions. Often trainers do not use this possibility at all. But you should change that in the future, because trading can really pay off for you.
That’s why you should avoid this mistake:
With a little luck, you can increase your chances of getting a lucky Pokémon through the daily swap actions and get one or even more.
This is especially useful for monsters that spawn frequently in the wild during this time. In addition, you will be collecting for your Platinum Medals “Gentleman” and “Pilot”.
In addition, you can also evolve one or the other Pokémon for free by trading. You can see which monsters these are in our overview:
Pokémon GO: Swap evolution – All evolutions that are free after the swap.
Error 3: Do not rate Pokémon correctly
Many trainers always try to keep some space in their Pokémon storage and therefore send their bad monsters that have a 0, 1, or 2 star rating. But this can be a big mistake that you better avoid in the future.
That’s why you should avoid this mistake:
Before you send a Pokémon to Professor Willow, you should rate it. At first, this sounds simple and obvious. But trainers who occasionally or even regularly play in the PvP League should take a closer look.
While Pokémon with a 3- or even 4-star rating are excellent for use in Raids, the rating in the PvP League behaves somewhat differently. It often has optimal strength there when the attack value is as low as possible.
As a result, however, the most suitable candidates for the GO Battle League usually have a lower star rating. So if you want to be active in the PvP battles, you should look at the individual values (attack, defense and endurance) in addition to the overall star rating.
That’s why the attack value is so low for strong PvP attackers:
Attack value plays a crucial role, especially for selection in Super League and Hyper League. Here, the Pokémon to be used are limited to a certain number of WP. In the Super League, this is a maximum of 1,500 WP. The Pokémon must not exceed this number.
The WP value is calculated from attack, defense, stamina and level of the respective monster. However, the attack value counts the most in the calculation. If the attack value is lower, the other values can be significantly higher.
Error 4: Leveling up Pokémon too fast
This is the bug:
If you’ve caught a strong Pokémon, you’ll naturally want to level it up right away. However, this will cost you some stardust and a few candies. If you don’t need the Pokémon directly for a raid or PvP battle, you should avoid this mistake and wait a little longer to get the power-ups.
Therefore, you should avoid the mistake:
Periodically, in field researches, special researches or the limited quests, the tasks come that you should level up a Pokémon.
If you already have all your strong monsters at a high level, then to solve this task you will give away precious stardust and candies to weaker Pokémon, which you may end up shipping. So be a little patient.
Tip: Use the tag function in the game to have the strong monsters you like to push at a glance. This will make it easier for you to find them again when you get a corresponding task.
Error 5: Do not open gifts
If you have made friends with other trainers in the game, then these players can send you packages and you can send them packages too, of course. Often, however, these packages are not (all) opened. But you should definitely do that, because it brings you several advantages.
Therefore, you should avoid this mistake:
During the day you normally have the possibility to open up to 20 gifts. However, due to events, this limit is regularly increased and you can open more packages.
You should definitely use this possibility, because on the one hand it increases your friendship level and on the other hand you can expect stardust. You will receive stardust for each opened package. In addition, you can expect a lot of items, such as balls, berries and potions. This way, you can find new friends for Pokémon GO all over the world.
Due to the Light Festival currently taking place, the limit for opening gifts has been increased to 45 per day. You will also increase your friendship level twice as fast.
Bug 6: Not using friendship level advancement properly
Now, those who have regularly opened their friends’ gifts or otherwise interacted with them will sooner or later face friendship level advancement with them. However, some trainers commit this climb completely carelessly, which can cost them some XP.
Therefore, you should avoid the mistake:
Depending on which friendship level you advance to, there are different XPs. However, you can increase these additionally by placing a lucky egg. If you have placed the egg, you will receive twice as much XP for 30 minutes. If you do not place the egg, you will give away this bonus.
You can expect the following XP for each level up:
Friendship level | EP | EP with lucky egg |
1 full heart | 3.000 | 6.000 |
2 full hearts | 10.000 | 20.000 |
3 full hearts | 50.000 | 100.000 |
4 full hearts | 100.000 | 200.000 |
You can see the current status of your friendship level by clicking on the heart bar next to your friend. If you click on the last heart that fills up, you will see how many days you have left to play together until you level up.
Tip: To make it really worthwhile, you should also wait for a Community Day and gather several friends for an advancement. To tell friends about this advancement in the game, many players rename their buddy Pokémon accordingly, e.g. “LvlupCD11CET”.
This designation would mean that the level up will occur at 11 a.m. Central European Time, German time, on the next Community Day. This way, trainers can be prepared for the onset of a lucky ice cream.
Error 7: Do not play raids
Every player receives a free raid pass every day. However, this is not redeemed by every trainer. This is a mistake that you should avoid at all costs.
Therefore, you should avoid the mistake:
If you don’t use your free Raid Pass for two consecutive days, you will give away all other free Raid Passes until you redeem it. This will cause you to miss out on precious stardust, XP, and valuable items like golden Himmihberries or special candies, in addition to a Pokémon.
For this reason, it’s also worth using the daily raid pass. Especially the level 5 raids have interesting legendary Pokémon in store for you. Many of them are now also available in the game in their iridescent variant. You should not miss this chance, because with a little luck you will meet a Shiny. Currently, you can find the raid bosses Kobalium, Viridium and Terrakium.
Your chances of getting a Shiny monster aren’t that bad with legendary Pokémon, either. We have summarized the Shiny probabilities of the individual monsters here.
Mistake 8: Not using berries correctly
Even with the benefit of berries, some trainers make mistakes. Especially the Sanana Berries are often left unattended in the bag. As soon as the item bag is full, the berries are often the first to be disposed of. You’d better change that in the future, because they can be of great use to you.
Therefore, you should avoid this mistake:
You should avoid this mistake and use your berries properly. For example, Sanana Berries give you double candy when you catch a Pokémon. So if you make your daily rounds, you should also feed a Sanana Berry to strong and rare monsters. This helps you to evolve the monsters faster or even to level them up.
But the berries are also ideal for regularly feeding Pokémon in arenas. Even if you’re not being attacked and you’re relatively safe in an arena, it’s worth feeding a berry or two to yourself or your teammates.
For each feeding you receive stardust or, with a bit of luck, a candy of the corresponding monster. This is especially worthwhile for rare Pokémon like Milza. In addition, you get your arena a little faster to the gold status. And you’ll also get a lot closer to the platinum medal for “Berry Master”.
So before you dispose of the berries at the next full item bag to be able to turn PokéStops and arenas again, you should better use them to feed your monsters.
What mistakes have you made from this in the past that you want to avoid in the future? Or do you know of any other mistakes that many players make? Feel free to write us your opinion here on MeinMMO in the comments and share it with other trainers.
