Twitch streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins is considered extremely ambitious, not only in games like Fortnite, but also in League of Legends. On Saturday night, 09/07, he played an exhibition match that he was challenged to by MrBeast. Ninja grabbed Tyler1 and Doublelift, two real LoL kings, but the plan didn’t work out.
Here’s the situation:
- Ninja is an ambitious gamer and entertainer who became the biggest streamer on Twitch in 2018 with Fortnite. Lately, he’s been out of the limelight a bit and playing LoL a lot.
- YouTuber “MrBeast” is known for just throwing money around and planning huge events. He challenged Ninja to an exhibition match in LoL: It was supposed to be for $150,000 for a good cause. Both captains set up their teams.
- Ninja decided to bring in Doublelift and Tyler1, two strong LoL players who have egos similar to his. All 3 are considered terrible trash talkers. In addition to the two LoL experts, he brought in Ludwig and YouTuber Sapnap, two players who barely know anything about LoL.
Team Ninja: Super stars and “Iron” players in one team
This is what the teams looked like: Both teams were relatively similar in makeup: Each team had 2 really good LoL players on it, and two streamers not known for LoL. In addition just the team captains.
Team Ninja consisted of:
- Ninja himself, who plays LoL like crazy in the last years and likes to lose his temper – he was the midlaner
- Tyler1, a fanatic LoL streamer who is considered aggressive, dogged and talented – he played top lane
- Doublelift, one of the best LoL players in North America of all time who is now streaming – played botlane
- Ludwig, a former Super Smash commentator who has always been known more for his entertainment factor than his player skills – he had to play as a supporter
- Sapnap – a Minecraft-YouTuber, he played in the Jungle
The MrBeast team consisted of:
- MrBeast – a YouTuber who throws around a lot of money – he was a supporter.
- Yassuo – a streamer for 100 Thieves who likes the character “Yassuo” – should be in the middle against Ninja. Yassuo is considered to be really strong.
- Voyboy – a former LoL pro who now works as a streamer – was up against Tyler1 on the top lane. Voyboy is also considered an expert in LoL.
- Mizkif – a Twitch streamer who comments a lot and plays Nintendo games – got to have fun in the Jungle. Like Ludwig, Mizkif is actually an entertainer, but he’s also a great gamer.
- Emiru – a Twitch streamer and Mizkif’s girlfriend. She had to compete against the professional Doublelift. Emiru has often proven that she can do something as a gamer. In LoL, she once complained directly to the developer.
LoL shows with perfect staging around Twitch streamers why they are years ahead of all e-sports games.
“Team Ninja” is considered a high favorite with 3 stars
This is how they thought the game would go out: On paper, “Team Ninja” was a pretty clear favorite:
Alone they “should” actually win such a fun tournament if they get their act together and play botlane together.
Besides, despite all the criticism of him, Ninja is also a gifted gamer.
Doubelift was one of the strongest players in the US for years.
“Ludwig lost the match practically by himself”
This is how the game really went: Instead of putting Doubellift and Tyler1 in the botlane and dominating the thing, they put Doublelift the YouTuber Ludwig as support and it went horribly wrong.
Because Ludwig couldn’t get anything done.
Tyler1 said: Ludwig is an absolute weak point – he almost lost the game by himself. Ludwig can’t believe it in the background:
MrBeast’s team won both games relatively easily:
- They decided the first match after 33 minutes with 35 to 21 kills
- The second match was even clearer with 26 to 12 after 25 minutes.
The third match was actually unnecessary, but Ninja put another 50,000 $ on it, changed the team once completely and could restore the honor a little bit. Now Team Ninja won with 27 to 12 after 28 minutes.
Weak players decide LoL match, not the strong ones
How to discuss the match? Most of the criticism on reddit hits poor Ludwig. Being beaten with that as a supporter must be like visiting the “Ninth Circle of Hell”, says one user.
Other players were also criticized:
- Doubelift was unable to gain a clear advantage over Emiru, which then amused many.
- Ninja was clearly shown his limits in the midlane against Yassuo, although he is a “high ranked” player, he simply saw no land against a real expert.
- Tyler1 was superior against Voyboy, but not strong enough to make up for the lost midlane and botlane.
- Sapnap was quite a victim in the Jungle, while Mizkif played solidly.
So in the end, MrBeast’s two “weak players”, Emiru and Mizkif, were both significantly better than Team Ninja’s weak players.
That all changed in game 3: They put Tyler1 as supporter, let Ninja play Samira in the botlane and put Doublelift in the midlane – while they hid the “weak players”, Ludwig and Sapnap, in the jungle and on the toplane.
The plan then worked out perfectly, so they probably would have had to play the whole time.
That’s what’s behind it: Team “Ninja” was strangely constructed, because you have these 3 good players with even bigger egos, but with Sapnap and Ludwig two real weak points in the team – while the team of “MrBeast” was more balanced.
I guess the key would have been to pack two strong players on the botlane like in match 3 and let them go all the way. But that way everyone had fun and that was ultimately the point of the event. The star of the evening was once again Tyler1, who seems to really come alive on the big stage.
