A popular feature in Pokémon GO is trading monsters with other players. Our MeinMMO author Franzi Korittke swaps 100 monsters every day and explains why this can be worthwhile for you, too.
In Pokémon GO, trainers have the ability to trade up to 100 Pokémon per day with their friendly players. By trading, players can complete their Pokédex.
In this way, they get one or the other monster, which they themselves have not yet been able to catch, but their friend has. But there is also a chance to get a strong specimen.
However, I see even more advantages in regular swapping and therefore use this limit almost every day. Therefore I explain to you why I do this and why it can also be worthwhile for you.
3 reasons why I swap 100 monsters daily
1. lucky Pokémon
First and foremost, I started trading so many Pokémon to increase my chances of getting a Lucky Pokémon. I have many “Best Friends” in the game, with whom I have now also reached Lucky Friend status, but most of them live too far away or I don’t know them personally.
But you don’t have to wait for Lucky Friends status to make a Lucky Swap, because you can hope for a Lucky Pokémon in a normal swap, too. The probability of a lucky swap is usually around 5%, which is about every 20th swap.
Especially monsters that can be found regularly in the wild or spawn more frequently due to an event are therefore ideal for trading them on a large scale. It’s best to catch them in advance in the appropriate quantity and then trade a larger number at once to increase your chances.
This way, you’ll get a lot of new entries in your lucky Pokédex, and you’ll also be able to enjoy a strong specimen or two.
What are Lucky Pokémon?
These monsters are special specimens that, as the name suggests, you can get by trading for them with a bit of luck. Alternatively, you’ll get a guaranteed lucky swap when you reach Lucky Friend status with your best friend.
You can recognize the monsters by their golden background. What makes them special is that they are usually relatively strong, as the Lucky Pokémon’s IV is at least 80%. In addition, the stardust costs that you have to spend to level up are reduced by half for you.
2nd Candy Farming
Another reason to take advantage of the daily swaps is the current candy bonus in the – Season of origin. Until February 28, you will receive an additional “normal” candy and a guaranteed XL candy with every swap.
The latter you normally only get when swapping Pokémon caught at a distance of more than 100 km from each other. On the other hand, if the distance is smaller, an XL Candy is a coincidence.
For this reason, swapping monsters with strong evolutions, like Machollo or Squeak, is really worth it right now. Because no matter in which distance the monsters were caught, one XL-Candy per exchange is guaranteed.
With the amount of daily swaps, this adds up to quite a few candies. So for me an absolute must to use this bonus.
But even outside of the current – Season bonus, you can farm candy well this way. The number of candies also depends on how far apart the monsters were caught. You can expect the following candy regularly:
Distance | Number of guaranteed candies |
0 – 10 km | 1 candy |
10 – 100 km | 2 candies |
from 100 km | 3 candies + 1 XL candy (from level 40) |
For those who are still missing a few candies to level up or develop a strong specimen, it is therefore an easy earned way to get the corresponding candies. In addition, the monsters obtained in the exchange itself can be sent to Professor Willow afterwards, which brings more candies.
3. Collect Medals
But the monsters themselves and the associated candies aren’t the only reasons why a lot of trading is worthwhile. Achieving as many platinum medals as possible is also part of it.
Some of them revolve around trading anyway, like Gentleman and Pilot. In these, you need to swap 2,500 Pokémon for the Platinum Medal or reach a total swap distance of 10,000,000 km. For this reason, the daily swaps here will get you quite a bit further.
But there are other, unremarkable medals for which your swaps can be incredibly helpful. These include the Angler and Teenager medals, which are causing a lot of frustration in the community right now. For the platinum medal, you have to catch 1,000 large Karpador and tiny Rattfratz, respectively. For the gold medal, you need to catch 300.
This may not be so easy, which is why it’s a good idea to trade these corresponding specimens. Because each exchanged big Karpador and tiny Rattfratz will also count for your medal, even if you didn’t catch it yourself.
Are there disadvantages to trading so many Pokémon?
That’s how big the time commitment is: In order to be able to trade so many Pokémon every day, you have to catch them first, of course. That costs time accordingly. But the swapping itself is also time-consuming. My husband and I need about an hour to swap 100 Pokémon. So that’s quite a while, which is why we often do it while watching movies in the evening.
Another point of criticism is the high amount of stardust you have to spend by swapping every day. Depending on what kind of Pokémon it is, there are different stardust costs.
How much stardust does it cost?
I usually only swap monsters that we both already have in this large amount. So the cost is 100 stardust per swap. This is the minimum amount you get when you catch a monster.
However, by catching one of the 22 monsters with a stardust bonus or a Pokémon with a weather boost, this balances out to some extent and doesn’t matter as much in my view.
Tips for trading Pokémon
For trainers who are curious and want to start trading up to 100 Pokémon a day themselves, I have put together a few more tips below:
- See which Pokémon you are still missing as a strong specimen or lucky Pokémon and exchange them specifically.
- Collect the corresponding monsters in advance in a larger number, so that you can exchange several in a row. If you are hoping for a lucky Pokémon, I recommend saving up at least 30 pieces.
- Use events to collect new Pokémon on a large scale.
- During the – Season of origin, depending on the Pokémon, you may want to trade them instead of shipping them to get more candy.
- It’s best to pre-sort your monsters in advance so you don’t have to evaluate and search during the swap. You can also use your tag function in the game. By entering the specific name of the respective tag, e.g. “Swap”, you can then search for it in the swap mask.
How often do you trade Pokémon? Do you take advantage of these opportunities for lucky Pokémon, stronger specimens, and more XL candies, or is that not really your thing? Feel free to write us your opinion about it here on MeinMMO in the comments and share it with other trainers.
By the way, you can also trade Pokémon GO monsters to evolve them for free afterwards. We have summarized all the swap evolutions in the game for you.
