2023 could be the first time in 18 years that no new part is released

2023 will probably have to do without a new CoD part.

Ever since the planned takeover of Activision by Microsoft was announced, there has been speculation as to whether the new patronage could also mean the end for the annual spin-offs of the series. And indeed, according to a report from Bloomberg (paywall), there will be no new CoD in 2023. But that probably has nothing to do with the Microsoft deal.

CoD 2023 will probably not appear until 2024

Insider sources reportedly know that decision-makers at Activision have already decided not to release a new Call of Duty in 2023 – at least not a main installment or “premium title,” as the publisher calls them. The spin-off planned for next year, which according to rumors is in the works at Treyarch for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, is not supposed to come until 2024.

Activision says: The publisher has responded and already released a short statement about it:

We have an exciting lineup of premium and free Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year, and the year after. Reports that say otherwise are false.

A concrete denial looks different. The statement actually just says that some kind of Call of Duty will be released next year as well. And we already know through various leaks that Warzone 2 is planned for 2023. A mobile spin-off would also be an option.

CoD Warzone is supposedly getting a sequel in 2023, but only for PS5 and Xbox Series XS.

New directions for Activision?

With the Warzone sequel, Activision has a strong CoD up its sleeve for 2023. That would theoretically give the publisher the opportunity to give the main series some breathing room and skip 2023. According to Bloomeberg, “a recent installment failed to meet expectations.” It sounds like the franchise’s long run of success is starting to falter.

Is Vanguard the reason? The specific title is not mentioned, but we can assume that when the recently released title Call of Duty: Vanguard is meant. The shooter is a top seller, but it can’t sell as well as its direct predecessors. In addition, Activision itself admitted to problems with the title. So it’s quite possible that the main spin-offs will be a bit further apart in the future and the gaps will be filled with Free2Play content.

CoD 2022 probably comes on time

So far, the decision has had no impact on this year’s Call of Duty. Activision has already officially confirmed that CoD 2022 will come and is in the works at Infinity Ward.

Thanks to leaks, we know that the title is supposed to be a sequel to 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which unsurprisingly will probably be called Modern Warfare 2.

Would it bother you if Call of Duty was no longer released annually?
