Online shooters are among the most popular games on the market. 2022 has a lot to offer again – whether on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S or Nintendo Switch. MeinMMO tells you which shooter releases you should pay special attention to this year.

To get you ready for the gaming year 2022, we tell you here the most important releases from the shooter market. Here you’ll find PvP, PvE, and PvPvE games scheduled for release in 2022 on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. However, the announced dates can still change until the release.

This article was originally written on January 21, 2022. We will update this list when new announcements come or the listed games are released.

The listed games are sorted alphabetically only. So this list is not a ranking, but an overview of the most important online shooter releases in 2022 for all platforms.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – For PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S

What is this game? After many rumors, official confirmations are slowly coming that the latest Call of Duty in 2022 will be the successor to the popular Modern Warfare from 2019.

Not much is currently known about Modern Warfare 2, but there are some leaks. However, these should be taken with a grain of salt until there is official confirmation:

• It will probably be the last CoD on PS4 and Xbox One.
• It will probably be released already in October, and thus a month earlier than usual
• The campaign is to continue the story of CoD MW
• There is again a collaboration with Warzone, possibly even directly Warzone 2
• Co-op mode could be based on Escape from Tarkov
• The multiplayer should probably benefit from many map remakes
• With CoD 2023 likely out, CoD MW2 will be the biggest title in the shooter series yet

ExoMecha – For PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S

What is this game? ExoMecha is an MMO shooter that is supposed to be free-to-play. It is primarily a Battle Royale, but other multiplayer modes are also available. As the name suggests, the game combines 2 sci-fi elements – exo-suits and large mechs.

In the trailer you can see the action, which is reminiscent of a mixture of Transformers and Titanfall:

How does the shooter play? ExoMecha puts great emphasis on a flexible class and skill system.

Your soldiers with exo-suits can equip abilities, weapons and gadgets at will, but are limited in quantity. For example, if you want to have two active abilities, you’ll have to give up one weapon and all passive abilities in return. You can even make these changes in the middle of a round of Battle Royale to adapt to the circumstances.

Also important are your Titanfall-like mechs. These are available to you like vehicles in a match. The mechs must be customized before each round and are very versatile: besides large robots with swords and shields, agile metal spiders and robo-dragons are also in the game.

When will the game be released? The game was announced for Q1 2022, but an exact date is currently unknown.

Isonzo – For PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S

What is this game? Isonzo is the next PvP shooter from the makers of Tannenberg and Verdun. Once again, the First World War is the setting, this time the mountains of Italy are the battlefield.

How does the shooter play? After the trench warfare from Verdun and the control battles in Tannenberg, Isonzo focuses on a new game mode. In Italy’s mountains or ruined cities, one team attacks while another defends. The altitude differences offered by the setting should strongly influence which strategies you have to resort to.

The game focuses on large battles with up to 64 players. Developer M2H emphasizes how authentic they want to keep graphics, gameplay and atmosphere. Accordingly, your arsenal consists of the most important weapons of the First World War, such as poison gas and mortars.

When will the game be released? The buy-to-play game is scheduled for release in early 2022. There is currently no exact date.

Overwatch 2 – For PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S

What is this game? Overwatch 2 is the long-awaited successor to Blizzard’s hero shooter. With a variety of characters, each with their own personality and special skills, the game resembles a mix of a PvP shooter and a MOBA.

How does the shooter play? The second part doesn’t change much, but some elements do, sometimes dramatically. An unpopular game mode has been eliminated, teams have been shortened to 5 players, and heroes have been drastically reworked. Blizzard hopes that this will result in more intensive and faster gameplay.

The biggest innovation is a co-op campaign, which should be played very often thanks to the many characters with their new skill trees. In addition, the content from Overwatch 1 is to be seamlessly integrated into the successor, so that you can play with both games in the same matches.

When will the game be released? There is currently no exact release date for Overwatch 2. It could still be released in 2022 despite a turbulent time at Blizzard, though a release as late as 2023 is not unlikely. The announced release platforms should not change despite the spectacular Microsoft takeover.

Redfall – For PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S

What is this game? Redfall is the latest game from Arkane, the makers of Dishonored, Prey and Deathloop. This game is a first-person shooter in an open-world that you can play both solo and in co-op.

How does the shooter play? Official gameplay hasn’t been seen yet, but the trailer offers some insights:

In Redfall you can play one of 4 survivors. They can use special abilities like telekinesis, levitation or invisibility. They also have crazy weapons like cryo lasers and wooden stake harpoons at their disposal. A baller cute robo-friend gives them assistance.

When will the game be released? The game is scheduled for release in the summer of 2022 on PC and the Xbox consoles. The game will likely be buy-to-play, but will be available via Game Pass upon release.

Splatoon 3 – For Nintendo Switch

What is this game? Splatoon 3 is the latest installment in Nintendo’s insanely successful PvP shooter franchise. The second part has already sold over 13 million copies, according to Nintendo (via Nintendo). The third part will also be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch.

How does the shooter play? The special thing about Splatoon is the color mechanic: Not only do you kill enemies with your weapons, but you also paint the environment colorful. Your own team color then allows you to move quickly – but not the enemies. This makes for unique gameplay with a dynamic battle for map control.

Thanks to colorful graphics and a solo campaign, Splatoon 3 appeals to a wide audience, but shooter fans are in for a treat, especially in 4v4 multiplayer: fast movement, short TTK, no aim assist thanks to motion controls, ranked modes, lots of weapons – this motley game is a real hardcore shooter for fans.

When will the game be released? There is no exact date for Splatoon 3 yet. However, it is scheduled to be released exclusively as a buy-to-play on the Switch in 2022.

The Cycle: Frontier – For PC

What is this game? The Cycle is a so-called PvPvE shooter from the German developer Yager. Towards the end of 2021 the game got a lot of attention, then finished beta. In 2022 it is scheduled for full release under the name The Cycle: Frontier.

How does the shooter play? The Cycle is a free-to-play shooter whose gameplay is reminiscent of a mixture of survival games and Hunt: Showdown. So you fight not only against other players, but also against AI opponents. The developers call this a PvPvE game. Unlike the direct competition, The Cycle is a sci-fi setting on an alien and dangerous planet. Not only aliens are a danger here – the weather can also be deadly.

Like in Hunt or Escape from Tarkov, the focus is on collecting resources and loot, which you lose completely when you die. In addition, there is a social hub with different factions that feed you with missions. With these, you’ll unlock new weapons and upgrades.

When will the game be released? The F2P game will be released on PC in spring 2022 – probably in May.
